Maples Retirement Living is a senior living community in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Currently we have over two hundred units of independent living, townhomes and apartments for rent to seniors.  Our purpose is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience to residents and to enhance the quality of their everyday living. 

The Role

Under the direction of Management, the Property Maintenance Worker will be responsible for the general maintenance of our townhomes and apartments. As well, the successful candidate will also be required to assist with maintenance on other buildings on an as needed basis.  The Property Maintenance Worker will represent the Maples in a positive, efficient, professional and confidential manner. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Responding to our internal maintenance request system where requests are prioritized in terms of urgency.
  • Using judgement and skills to diagnose issues with building infrastructure and equipment.
  • Performing building and equipment repairs and scheduled preventative maintenance work along with maintaining appropriate record keeping. 
  • Communicating respectfully and pleasantly with residents and other employees on our team while maintaining confidentiality and privacy. 
  • Dealing effectively with outside vendors, stores, or agencies. 
  • Observing all fire, safety and health regulations and being alert to the safety of residents, other employees and the public. 
  • Some snow shoveling in winter and assisting with snow clearing activities.
  • Promptly reporting or taking corrective action to address actual or potentially hazardous situations.
  • Other related duties and functions as assigned.   

Requirements

  • Work experience in one of the recognized maintenance trades , plumbing, refrigeration, electrical, industrial mechanics, or carpentry would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with flooring installations, ability to crack fill, paint, build things (i.e., build shelving, small carpentry projects, use basic carpentry hand tools and power tools), fix a small electrical issue, unplug a sink, take a drain apart, competent on running small equipment.  
  • Ability to operate various motor vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment related to the work environment.
  • Ability to perform required physical duties which may include bending, kneeling, reaching, standing for extended periods of time, climbing ladders, lifting, and carrying boxes, tools and equipment and snow shoveling in winter months. 
  • Access to a reliable vehicle is required.
  • Must be available to be on call for emergency issues on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
