OVERVIEW

We have an exciting opportunity for an energetic Junior Boarding Academic Advisor for the upcoming 25/26 school year.  This role will work as part of our Boarding House Team to assist with the pastoral care of our junior boarding students, support their academic achievements and develop an activity programme for these boarders. The Advisor is an advocate for the boarders and brings stability, routine, and a healthy, positive and pro-active work environment for the purpose of helping them achieve their academic and personal goals and develop strong work habits and ethic.  

This role will supervise study and evening activities Monday to Thursday 4:00pm to 8:30pm from September to mid-June for the junior boarders while school is in session and will also cover Wednesday morning Study Hall duty from 8:15am-9:30am.  This contract may be renewed on an annual basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic Study:

  • Provide strategies to help boarders get the most out of their study time and maintain their well-being through regular physical activity
  • Monitor and schedule private tutoring for junior boarding students with the assistance of the Learning Strategist and/or subject teachers
  • Be knowledgeable of the various support resources available to the students at the school
  • Partner and engage with teachers, parents, coaches, the Health Centre, the Learning Strategist and parents in support to each student’s academic growth and development

Pastoral Care:

  • Work with the House team to provide the general welfare, safety, pastoral care and personal development of the students in their care
  • Work with the House team to maintain a healthy routine of life for each student
  • Be visible and accessible to support and listen to the students, in order to develop a student-centred environment
  • Attend and participate in House meetings
  • Assist, as needed, with room inspections when on duty
  • Support and ensure all school policies and rules are understood and adhered to in a consistent fashion
  • Assist and refer disciplinary problems in a firm, equitable and caring manner

Activity Programme:

  • Develop, organize, and execute an activity programme for the boarders (e.g. physical activity, arts & crafts, scavenger activities, etc.)
  • Demonstrate and teach safe activities within a safe environment and manner
  • Maintain a high level of motivation and control in activities while being engaged, kind, and enthusiastic
  • Work in conjunction with the house team and teachers, including planning the Saturday activity for the teacher on duty

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled or completion of a Bachelor of Education and/or equivalent teaching experience with qualifications in junior/intermediate level is preferred
  • Experience tutoring/teaching children grade 6-8 is preferred
  • Self–starter who is interested in the growth and development of our students
  • A mature, confident adult with the ability to take charge and lead by example
  • Globally minded and open to diversity of cultures 
  • Possess an empathetic, patient and a nurturing disposition
  • Organizational and time management skills with the ability to set priorities, multi-task, meet deadlines and able to help students stay organized in their responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationship of trust with students and team members
  • Tactful and sensitive when dealing with discreet personal information and situations
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and creativity
