Location: YMCA Centre for Immigrant Programs

About the Role:

As the Express Settlement Services staff you will be responsible for responding to settlement needs of walk-in clients to the YMCA Centre for Immigrant Programs and provide them with a range of settlement services and referrals based on individual needs.  These positions will provide support around non crisis, routine, immediate settlement questions.  The expectation is that these brief interventions will allow for in person needs to be addressed and/or appropriately referred to YMCA staff and/or other community resources for more in depth follow up as required. 

In this role, you will:

  • Problem-solving facilitation that are culturally sensitive and nonjudgmental
  • Supporting the building of protective factors through involvement in existing programing
  • Assisting and advocating for clients to access required supports
  • Providing referrals to appropriate internal or external resources and follow up 
  • Providing support to clients in navigating and mapping the resources available in the community
  • Working as part of a team with other members of YMCA staff, in the provision of services for newcomer families

Education and Skills Qualifications

  • Experience working in a community or service centre environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (ability to speak Arabic an asset)
  • Knowledge of the settlement sector and topics impacting newcomers to Nova Scotia
  • Robust understanding and connection to a variety of community services and resources 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations 
  • Effective and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • High level of initiative and ability needed to work independently and respond to unanticipated items
  • Demonstrated discretion and sound judgement in the handling of confidential information
  • Microsoft 365 Office skills
