POSITION SUMMARY

Step into a leadership role as our Mechanical Leadhand, where you’ll oversee day-to-day maintenance and repair activities while supporting a skilled mechanical team. You’ll provide hands-on guidance, troubleshoot equipment issues, and ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. Acting as the first point of contact on the shop floor, you’ll mentor team members, coordinate tasks, and work closely with the Supervisor or Maintenance Manager to plan and execute mechanical work. Responsibilities


Leadership & Team Support

  • Provide hands-on leadership and direction to mechanics, apprentices, and labourers.
  • Assign daily tasks and ensure work is completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
  • Train and mentor team members on proper mechanical techniques, troubleshooting, and safe work practices.
  • Support the supervisor with workforce planning and shift coordination.

Maintenance & Repair

  • Able to perform diagnostics, repairs, adjustments, and preventive maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment, light vehicles, and mechanical systems.
  • Assist mechanics with complex repairs and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure maintenance records, work orders, and inspection reports are completed accurately.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and enforce company and site safety policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Conduct pre-job hazard assessments and ensure the crew follows safe work practices.
  • Participate in incident reporting, near-miss investigations, and corrective actions as required.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and work areas are kept clean, safe, and serviceable.

Planning & Coordination

  • Work with the Supervisor/Maintenance Manager to plan scheduled maintenance and repairs.
  • Communicate parts, materials, and tooling needs to ensure efficient operations.
  • Assist in monitoring equipment performance and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Support coordination between operations and maintenance to minimize downtime.

 

Mentorship and Knowledge Sharing


Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to team members, especially local Tahltan workers, by sharing technical skills, safety practices, and industry knowledge in a respectful and culturally aware manner. Uphold Tahltan values and principles by fostering a work environment built on respect, teamwork, and mutual learning. Support the growth of the Tahltan workforce by helping build capacity, promoting safe and effective work practices, and ensuring that knowledge is passed on to strengthen both the team and the broader Tahltan community for the benefit of current and future generation.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Red Seal Technician or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of mechanical experience, preferably in industrial, mining, civil construction, or similar environments.
  • Previous experience in a leadhand or informal leadership role an asset.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and repair documentation.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

  • Strong knowledge of heavy-duty equipment systems (engines, hydraulics, electrical, pneumatics).
  • Skilled in troubleshooting, diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, schematics, and technical diagrams.
  • Proven leadership abilities to guide mechanics, apprentices, and labourers.
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with supervisors and operations teams.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to train team members and support skill development.
  • Solid understanding of safety regulations and commitment to promoting a safe work environment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate service records and work orders with prior experience using a CMMS system.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail and quality workmanship.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT


  • Willingness to sign an Oath of Confidentiality
  •  Ability to pass a mandatory pre-employment drug and alcohol screening to visit site.
  • Valid driver’s license and current abstract 

WORKING CONDITIONS


  • May be required to work in remote locations, on uneven terrain, or at heights.
  • Regular use of heavy machinery, hand tools, and power tools if required.
  • Physical demands include standing for long periods, lifting, bending, and moving equipment or parts.
  • Shift work, overtime, and call-outs may be required depending on operational needs.
  • Work is primarily performed in a shop environment and outdoors, often exposed to varying weather conditions.
  • Must adhere to strict safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
