Position Summary:
The Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) is a key leadership role responsible for shaping and driving a culture where safety, environmental stewardship, and community come first.
In this role, you will lead the development and execution of comprehensive HSE strategies that protect our people, respect the land, and ensure compliance across all operations. You will be a trusted partner to leadership, empowering teams to operate safely and sustainably while continuously improving performance.
We are looking for a strategic and influential leader who is deeply committed to safety excellence and meaningful engagement with the Tahltan Nation. Based out of our Calgary or Vancouver office, this role requires regular travel to TNDC job sites and offices, providing hands-on leadership and support where it matters most.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
A. Leadership and Strategy:
- Develop and implement HSE policies, procedures, and programs in alignment with TNDC’s strategic objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Lead and inspire the HSE team, fostering a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with senior management to integrate HSE considerations into business planning and decision-making processes.
- Ensure the successful maintenance of our COR.
- Design programs to ensure the reduction of WCB costs, lost time incidences and injuries.
B. Health and Safety Management:
- Ensure the development and execution of safety training programs for all employees.
- Oversee incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Monitor, analyze, and report on HSE performance metrics and trends to senior management.
- Liaise with HR and Project Management with the Return-to-Work Program.
- Managing workplace injury claims, minimizing time loss and claim costs through early intervention and proactive co-ordination of services.
- Processing claims, negotiating settlements, verifying insurance coverage, and reviewing insurance cases.
- Reviewing claim files.
- Interpreting provincial workers’ compensation legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Assist in the ongoing development and review of risk assessments (JHA) and safe working practices.
- Facilitate the provision of and maintenance of records in relation to all Project HSE training including toolbox talks, orientations and weekly Safety Meetings.
- Coordinating case management activities including developing, implementing, and monitoring return to work and rehabilitation strategies.
- Ensure the investigation of incidents and near misses and provide root cause analysis.
C. Environmental Stewardship:
- Develop and manage environmental policies and programs to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and best practices.
- Promote sustainability initiatives and environmental conservation efforts within TNDC’s operations.
D. Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations and standards.
- Liaise with regulatory agencies and maintain effective working relationships.
E. Community Engagement:
- Work closely with the Tahltan Nation and other stakeholders to ensure HSE programs are culturally sensitive and aligned with community values.
- Address and resolve any HSE concerns or issues raised by the community, ensuring transparency and trust.
- Other duties as required.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in HSE management and leadership, preferably within the mining, construction, or energy sectors.
- Certification in occupational health and safety (e.g., CRSP, CSP) is preferred.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is carried out between our Calgary and Vancouver Offices. There will be regular travel between our projects and in community. Regular requirements to meet critical deadlines can cause stress.
Overtime may be required. Ability to travel as required.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

- Valid class 5 driver’s license and willing to provide a current driver abstract.
- Willingness to work occasional overtime during peak or critical work periods.

SUPERVISION
Supervises the Health and Safety Team.
