Compensation:   $23.53 – $31.00 per hour dependent on qualifications and experience

SEC maintains its head office in Newmarket and provides public service signature expertise for immigrants, newcomers, early learning and development, Family Justice Service, Career and Labour market integration through programs such as Supervised Access, EarlyOn Child & Family Centers, Welcome Centre for Immigrant Services-Newmarket and several Before & After School and Licensed Childcare Programs.

The Opportunity

Early Years supply shifts are available as needed in our licensed Before & After School programs, Care for Newcomer Children’s program and EarlyON Child & Family Centre programs. We are looking for enthusiastic Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECE), Early Childhood Assistants (ECA) and Family Program Educators for these programs.  

The On-Call Supply team plays a key role in creating safe, welcoming, and caring environments for children and their families. Supply staff collaborate with program teams to support the planning and delivery of high-quality programming, facilitate engaging activities, and promote physical activity, healthy eating, positive personal development, and overall wellness. They are enthusiastic team players with knowledge of child development and effective behaviour management practices, and they bring strong communication skills, reliability, and a flexible approach to supporting program needs.

Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs) take the lead in program development and implementation, ensuring that environments are inclusive, stimulating, and aligned with best practices in early learning. RECEs demonstrate strong programming and behaviour management skills, including problem-solving, positive reinforcement, and redirection strategies. The ideal candidate is reliable, punctual, adaptable, and committed to fostering successful child development while contributing to a positive and collaborative team environment.

Key Job Responsibilities

Facilitate a variety of physical activities aimed at engaging students in fun, recreational and life-long learning objectives.

Plan for and implement an inquiry based emergent curriculum based on children’s individual interests and needs.

Supervise children attending the program and promote safety and respect amongst all participants.

Ensure a friendly and supportive atmosphere is maintained by developing appropriate strategies to support children in managing their behaviour.

Respond to the individual needs of children and establish stable and consistent relationships with each child and their families/caregivers.

Liaise sensitively with parents on matters concerning their children while maintaining confidentiality.

Ensure that the health and safety needs of the children are met and all health and safety issues are dealt with immediately and appropriately. Ensure correct procedures are followed for administering first aid.

Carry out daily risk assessments and ensure the supervision of children during activities inside or outside the school. 

Plan, coordinate and provide a healthy snack to all participants within the program guidelines while accommodating all dietary restrictions.

Maintain all required records, forms and reports as required

Ensure the cleaning and tidying of the facility and be responsible for the safe storage of equipment, maintaining that all equipment is in good working order prior to usage.

Report on a regular basis to Supervisor regarding issues of need and/or concern.

Candidate Profile

Current registration with the College of Early Childhood Educators (RECE), or completion of an Early Childhood Education Assistant Certificate Program, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.

Minimum of two years’ experience as an Early Childhood Educator is preferred, with demonstrated ability to plan and deliver an inquiry-based, emergent curriculum.

Experience providing safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate activities for children in childcare, family support, or similar settings.

Strong knowledge of child development theories and practices, with the ability to apply positive behaviour guidance strategies.

Solid understanding of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures to ensure effective supervision, safety, and care of children at all times.

Proven ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with children, families, colleagues, community agencies, and the public.

Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in diverse environments and across all levels of staff and stakeholders.

High standards of professionalism, demonstrating strong morals and ethics, sound judgment, discretion, and respect for privacy and confidentiality.

Well-developed organizational, time management, problem-solving, and prioritization skills.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic and complex environment.

Proficiency with MS Office and other digital tools, with the ability to prepare, maintain, and write reports and records as required.

Physical ability to perform the requirements of the job, including active supervision and engagement with children.

Availability to accept shifts based on certifications, training, and qualifications held (e.g., RECE, ECA).

Other Requirements

Availability to work before and after school hours, with occasional PA Day shifts, evening hours for open houses, training, or other program needs.

Flexibility as a casual employee, with hours and days of work not guaranteed; shifts are offered based on program needs and staff availability.

Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role, including frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, and active participation in physical play or use of sports equipment.

Valid and current Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certification.

Current and satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Up-to-date immunizations, including proof of a Tuberculosis (TB) test.

Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation to various locations is considered an asset.

Willingness to work occasional overtime when required.
