General Purpose 

 

Under the direct supervision of the Early Child Development Specialist the Mentor Teacher will participate in providing support to the teaching staff. The Mentor Teacher is responsible for observing and assessing the classroom activities and to provide on-the-job guidance and training to staff and volunteers, in order to improve the qualifications and training of classroom staff, to maintain high quality education services and to promote career development. 

 

 

Essential Functions 

 

  • Participates actively with ECD Specialist in planning and reporting progress. 

  • Participate in all required mentor/coach development. 

  • Facilitate teacher’s understanding and implementation of teaching strategies to improve student outcomes based on instructional assessment data, program data and classroom observation. 

  • Facilitates teacher in reflection on and analyzing their practice and reviewing student outcomes to inform instruction and enhance student achievement. 

  • Understand and be able to articulate to the teaching staff, program curriculum and instruction. 

  • Create detailed mentor plans, which include focused goals and measure of success. 

  • Plan and implement comprehensive instruction support, designed to support instructional staff. 

  • Provides clear, direct and support feedback to the teacher based on analysis of practice. 

  • Consistently analyze teacher practice through ongoing classroom observations, data analysis and classroom observation. 

  • Utilize leadership styles that are appropriate for individual teachers. 

  • Observe teaching staff and share observations and recommendations with leadership at the center. 

  • Train individual teachers and assistants in planning, developing, and implementing the early childhood education program. 

  • Maintain a cooperative attitude with all staff in the role of policy implementation, mentoring, advising, and training. 

  • Train and mentor all education staff in appropriate teaching strategies. 

  • Mentor classroom staff, supporting curriculum and facilitate assessment based planning, utilizing Teaching Strategies Gold, CLASS and other tools as necessary. 

  • Allow teachers and assistants to observe her/him and other classroom staff, and leads discussions on what was demonstrated. 

  • Gives guidance and ideas regarding classroom/time management, discipline, scheduling, planning, and organizing the day. 

  • Develops monthly plans and reports, as it relates to NFCD’s Site-Based Management Approach. 

  • Champion the importance and value of a diverse, equitable and inclusive agency environment for participants, staff and visitors. Model behaviors which support the overall philosophy and design of the organization. 

 

Other Job Functions 

  • Regular center visits to all NFCD’s locations. 

  • Assists in the development and implementation of the annual training plan, including preservice, in-service, T/TA, and ongoing training requirements. 

  • Assists teachers with lesson planning. 

  • Provide orientation and training to new instructional staff. 

  • Maintain required recordkeeping, agendas, minutes, and sign-in sheets. 

  • Participate in on-site monitoring reviews. 

  • Attend recommended training programs, conferences, and organizations that promote professional growth and improvement of early childhood education. 

  • Assist teachers in analyzing and arranging the physical environment of the classroom. 

  • Promote self-observation and analysis skills among teachers and assistants. 

  • Understand the process of change and assist teachers in their effective implementation and understanding of the need to change. 

  • Resolve conflict between education staff through a variety of effective strategies and assist the staff with problem solving. 

  • Protect all children from physical punishment or verbal abuse by anyone in any program activity, and immediately report any such incident to the center director or person in charge. 

  • Assist staff in utilizing observation, screenings, and problem solving for individualization and identification of children for possible referral for suspected mental health concerns or disabilities. 

  • Maintain documentation of monitoring, coaching, and training activities. 

  • Supports and comply with all aspects of NFCD’s operating policies and procedures, HS/EHS Performance Standards 45 CFR, Florida Child Care Standards, and OEL Standards. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred 

  • Strong working knowledge of Head Start Act, Head Start Performance Standards, Early Learning Division and Childcare Division regulations. 

  • Understanding of childcare programs, early child education, social services issues, community action programs, and serving low-income communities. 

  • Must have experience working with adult learners. 

  • Thorough knowledge of the basic principles of appropriate early child development. 

  • Ability to work well with diverse service population. 

  • Ability to relate to people in a positive manner. 

  • Advanced computer literacy including but not limited to: database management, spreadsheet, word processing, internet, and email. 

  • Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills. 

  • Provide ongoing training and professional development to support staff in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities. 

  • Determining and prioritizing own work load. 

 

 

Qualifications – Education & Experience 

Licenses or Certifications 

CLASS Infants, CLASS Toddler, and CLASS Preschool Reliable Observers Certifications 

Teaching Strategies Gold Reliability Certification 

  • Active DCF Staff Credential 

Current Infant/Toddler/Young Child CPR and First Aid 

Education 

Degree Type:  Bachelor's degree             Major: Early Childhood Education or a similar field of study             Required:  Yes 

Work Experience  

Required: (1) year of lead or supervisory experience in a child development/child care center that would demonstrate the ability to perform described duties and responsibilities of the position. 

Preferred Two (2) years of successful teaching experience in a child development/child care center program 

 

Level of Physical Effort 

  • Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal. 

Physical Working Environment 

  • Minimal exposure to hazards typically found in general office environments where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident. 

  • Exposure to routine office noise and equipment. 

Background 

  • Must be able to pass a Level 2 background check. 

  • Must be able to pass a drug screen. 

  • Must be able to provide references for the previous 5 years work experience. 

 

Additional 

Contingency: 

  • Employment with NFCD is contingent upon an annual appropriation by the Legislature, federal funding, and successful implementation of job requirements, as measured by performance-based evaluations. In the event the federal, state, and/or local funds upon which employment is dependent are withdrawn or redirected, employment may be terminated and NFCD shall have no further liability to the employee beyond that already incurred prior to the termination date.
