R&D/QC Senior Chemist

Summary   

 

Provides leadership and teaching to plant and lab employees.  Conducts chemical and physical laboratory tests of raw material and paint samples and analyzes data by performing the following duties:

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

·         Manages development of new products based on assigned projects.  Makes laboratory batches of water and solvent-based paint formulations and documents results.

o   Prepares experimental paint samples for scaling up in production, following standardized formulas and required chemical processes.

o   Adds new products in SAP system.

o   Analyzes competitive products to determine physical properties.

·         Leads the Quality Control Department by directing testing and adjusting batches from production.

o   Assists in creating production schedule.

o   Conduct qualitative and quantitative testing of paints and raw materials associated with products.

o   Calibrate and use laboratory instrumentation and equipment required for tests, research and quality control.

o   Tests and analyzes products such as paints and coatings to determine, tint strength, gloss, viscosity, density, sag resistance, flow & level, pH and other characteristics.

o   Color matches samples using spectrophotometer CIELAB numbers.

o   Checks shelf stability oven retain samples and reports results.

o   Files drawdowns of batches in production.

o   Directs cleaning of laboratory benches, paints floor and dusts all equipment.

o   Maintain and rotate standards for comparison to production batches.

o   Manage modifying of formulation in SAP system based on production history.

·         Manages SDS creation process/incorporate digital worker.

·         Develops and teaches short courses to customers and company employees.

o   Attend customer trials.

o   Assists Sales and Marketing Department by providing information for creating aids.

o   Directs reorganizing lab to allow for growth of lab personnel.

·         Assists with Safety Inspections by performing weekly checks led by Lab Supervisor.

·         Assists with the Recycling Programs related to the County and Richards products led by Lab Supervisor.

·         Assists with Complaint Resolution led by Lab Supervisor.

·         Assists in Inventory Process with data migration and procedures

Qualifications

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Computer Skills

 

Basic computer skills:  Computer Color Matching Spectrophotometer, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and SAP

 

Language Skills

                                   

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety data sheets, safety rules, procedure manuals, operating and maintenance instructions.  Ability to create/write reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak in front of groups of people.

 

Mathematical & Chemical Skills

 

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, extrapolations, area, circumference and volume. Ability to understand basic chemistry, organic chemistry and analytical chemistry.

                        Supervisory Responsibility

 

                        This position supervises QC personnel.

 

Work Environment  

 

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and caustic chemicals.  The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to walk.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

 

This is a full-time, exempt position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, for example, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Let’s determine.  (Work hours/days can vary from time to time due to vacation schedules, overtime and other variables within the department that could require a temporary schedule adjustment.)

 

Education and/or Experience    

 

1.       Thorough familiarity with developing and making coating formulations, applying coatings and testing coatings.

2.       Science bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

3.       Technical school diploma.

4.       A combination of college and/or technical school and experience will be considered depending on extent of each.
