Skilled Trades Trainee
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Skilled Trades Trainee position is offered through a specialized training stream under Civiconnect’s Youth Skills Studio (YSS) program. This program provides participants with the essential technical and soft skills that are needed to start a career in the skilled trades.
This hands-on training program is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience and offers training in one of two skilled trades: General Machining and Carpentry.
Applicants will have the opportunity to indicate their preferred trade during the application process. Placements will be determined based on applicant preferences and industry demand.
Participants will work directly with a small business while receiving on-the-job training from industry professionals. They will gain hands-on experience operating equipment, reading and interpreting technical drawings, maintaining tools and machinery, and following workplace safety protocols.
Through a combination of structured workshops and hands-on learning, this program serves as a steppingstone for individuals looking to launch a career in the skilled trades.
HOURS OF WORK: 30
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: May 5th to July 2th
LOCATION: On-site, 2 weeks Niagara College, 10 weeks at Employer facilities within Golden Horseshoe.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in mandatory technical and soft skills workshops to develop foundational trade knowledge and workplace competencies.
Train in one of the following specialized skilled trades:
General Machining:
- Learn and assist with various machining tasks, including:
- Setting up and operating machining equipment (lathes, mills, and grinders) under professional supervision.
- Reading and interpreting blueprints to ensure precise machining of parts.
- Measuring and inspecting materials and finished components for quality and accuracy.
- Performing routine maintenance and cleaning of machinery.
Carpentry Trainee:
- Monitoring production processes and identifying potential areas for improvement.
- Assisting with additional tasks as needed.
WORKPLACE SAFETY & COLLABORATION:
- Follow strict safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to workplace regulations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Work closely with industry professionals to develop technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Collaborate with team members to complete projects and meet production goals.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to perform manual labour, including lifting, carrying, and moving materials or products.
- Required to stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, and use hand tools or machinery regularly.
Environmental Conditions:
- Work is conducted in a factory setting with exposure to dust, noise, and varying temperatures.
- Proper safety equipment, such as ear protection, dust masks, and gloves, will be provided and must be worn as required.
Health and Safety:
- Participants must disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, or mobility limitations to ensure proper accommodation and a safe working environment.
- Regular health and safety briefings will be conducted to ensure awareness of potential risks and the measures in place to mitigate them.
PROGRAMS / SOFTWARE USED:
- Microsoft Office Suite for record-keeping and reporting
- PayWorks for clocking in and out, tracking vacation, payroll, and storing essential employee records.

The YSS is an integrated learning environment, and no prior experience is required, though familiarity with machining or manufacturing processes is an asset.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Civiconnect receives government funding based on certain eligibility requirements. Please only apply if you meet the following criteria:
- Must be between 18-29 years of age
- Must be enrolled in part-time or full-time studies at a Canadian post-secondary institution with a co-op or internship
- Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
