The Organization
Since 1981, Ronald McDonald House
Charities (RMHC) Toronto has served as a place to call home for families with
seriously ill children undergoing treatment. RMHC Toronto encompasses a House
for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven Family Rooms in hospitals across
the Greater Toronto Area and in Sudbury. The families we serve come from
throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the world.
We are seeking to fill a volunteer Board Director
position to add expertise in Governance/Legal to our Board of Directors team in
Toronto.
About the Opportunity
RMHC Toronto is directed by
a board that is currently comprised of 17 directors who have the responsibility
of leading, developing and approving the strategic direction of RMHC Toronto and establishing appropriate governance and risk management
strategies to ensure promotion of the mission, protection of the assets, and sustainable long-term growth and viability.
We are specifically seeking to recruit a
Director with board governance experience and/or legal experience (in the
corporate or not-for-profit environment) to be an active participant on the Governance
and Nominating Committee of the Board.
Key
Accountabilities:
· Acting as a conscientious ambassador who advocates for the
organization's mission and garners support from the community,
· Fundraising, relationship building, willingness to engage
network,
· Approving and monitoring Operating Budget, Capital Budget
and Reserve Funds,
· Identifying, appointing and evaluating the CEO,
· Monitoring the organization's performance (overseeing the conduct
of the business of the organization),
· Overseeing risk management,
· Representing RMHC Toronto at events, as required,
· Attending and participating in Board of Director meetings (minimum
of 4 per year) - reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to meetings
and engaging in meaningful discussions,
· Participating on at least one Board Committee
(approximately 4 meetings per year),
· Board members will serve a term of three years and are
eligible for renewal for additional three-year terms up to a maximum of three
terms.
Qualifications:
Corporate Governance/Legal Experience
· Significant experience advising in the area of corporate
governance or not-for-profit governance;
· Experience in developing governance frameworks;
· Knowledge of regulatory requirements for charitable organizations;
· Previous experience in serving on a non-profit,
community-based board, and/or committee would be an asset;
· J.D./LLB would be considered an asset;
· Experience leading a team would be considered an asset;
· Must be 18 years of age or older.

· Ability to commit time to Board and Committee
responsibilities.
