Title: Volunteer Group Fitness Instructor

Hours: Minimum one (1) class per week; willingness to substitute for others

Location: John W. Lindsay YMCA

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Fitness Coordinator, volunteer Group Fitness Instructors are responsible for the provision of safe, effective, and meaningful group fitness classes that enhance member achievement of health and fitness goals. The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for designing each class so that it remains in-scope for their certification(s) and is accessible to members aged 13+ with varying levels of personal fitness and experience. Ideal volunteers will have a passion for fitness, a commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and the ability to create a positive and motivating environment for members. 

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for program delivery, including the designing and facilitation of group fitness classes that remain in-scope for the certification(s) you hold/maintain. 
  • Arrive 15 minutes before your class in order to unlock and prepare the space.
  • Select clean music/playlist(s) in alignment with the type of class and to promote a positive and welcoming atmosphere.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as taking class attendance, being sure to check in those participants who join after class has started. 
  • Advising participants which equipment to use during class and give recommendations for starting weight(s) or equipment set-up when necessary.
  • Ensure high quality program delivery and willingness to maintain certification(s).
  • Promote other YMCA programs, services, and certifications during class(es) to help members engage in multiple forms of physical activity, community building, and begin their instructor journey.
  • Maintain clear, frequent, and open communication with the Fitness Coordinator and other YMCA staff and volunteers, especially if running late or being unable to teach during an assigned day/time.
  • Ensure participants are putting away and cleaning their own equipment at the end of the class.
  • Ensure the group fitness space is clean and tidy before leaving.
  • Report any known or predicted safety hazards.
  • Ability to receive and pass on feedback from members about the class.
  • Assist the YMCA staff with documenting any incidents or accidents, no matter how minor, and communicate these back to the Coordinator on the same day. 

Qualifications & Skills

  • Group Fitness Instructor Certification  (YMCA, NSFA, canfitpro or equivalent.) This is mandatory.
  • Valid Intermediate Workplace First Aid and CPR-C. This is mandatory.
  • Experience in delivering group fitness programs considered an asset.
  • Personal Trainer and other certifications are an asset.
  • Ability to lift moderate-to-heavy fitness equipment.
  • Dedication to safety and quality.
  • Strong work ethic and desire for cleanliness and tidiness.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours required.

Please note that all volunteers of the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth are required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check, clear Child Abuse Registry Check.
