 ABOUT THE POSITION

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Counsellor to join our dynamic Counselling team. At Family Services Ottawa (FSO), we are committed to providing high-quality counselling services to individuals, couples, families, and groups experiencing a range of mental health challenges. This role includes direct clinical service with clients presenting mild to moderate and/or severe and persistent mental health challenges, including trauma, concurrent disorders, and complex psychosocial needs. The position also contributes to community outreach, community development, and agency-wide initiatives. This position requires availability for at least one evening per week, with occasional weekend work as needed to support client and program needs.

Key responsibilities include:

·         Deliver evidence-informed, trauma-informed, and strengths-based counselling

·         Conduct assessments, including risk assessment, and develop treatment plans with clients

·         Provide individual, couple, family, and group counselling

·         Provide referrals and collaborate with community resources and service providers

·         Training in a variety of Therapeutic modalities, with experience providing both brief(single session) and moderate to longer-term interventions

·         Assist clients with navigating systems and accessing practical support (e.g., housing, income support, legal)

·         Advocate for clients when needed

·         Attend counselling program team meetings

·         Participate in staff meetings, required professional development, and training

·         Participate in team meetings, staff development, supervision, and consultations

·         Engage in individual supervision and peer consultation sessions

·         Participating in community outreach and development initiatives

·         Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential client records and statistics

·         Contribute to agency committees and organizational initiatives

·         Prepare correspondence, case notes, and reports as required

·         Maintain accurate, confidential client files and statistical data in accordance with agency and funder standards

·         Complete administrative tasks related to agency operations and personnel needs

 

ABOUT YOU

 

You are an empathetic, ethical, and skilled counselling professional with:

·         A master’s degree in social work, Counselling Psychology, or an equivalent graduate degree

·         Registration in good standing with a regulated health college ( CRPO, OCSWSSW, or a relevant college)

·         2-3 years of direct psychotherapy experience  with individuals, couples, or families

·         Experience supporting clients with trauma, including gender-based violence

·         Experience with concurrent disorders

·         Experience working with diverse populations (culture, race, socioeconomic status, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation)

·         Experience working with LGBTTQ+ clients

·         Interest and experience working with Children and Youth and transition-aged youth would be considered an asset

·         Experience working with the newcomer population is also an asset

·         Strong understanding of mental health risk factors and risk assessment

·         Knowledge of community resources and referral pathways

·         Understanding of ethical practice standards for social workers, counsellors, and psychotherapists

·         Understanding of structural factors and systemic issues impacting client well-being

·         Strong clinical assessment and intervention skills

·         Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)

·         Ability to analyze individual and systemic issues affecting clients

·         Strong organizational and planning abilities

·         Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting

·         Proficiency with technology, including MS Word, PowerPoint, and client databases

·         Ability to work with trauma and complex situations

·         Ability to take initiative and work independently within program guidelines.

·         Ability to maintain a respectful, professional, and client-centered approach

·         Fluency in English and French  is required;  additional  languages are an asset
