About the Role:
The Gender-Based Violence Prevention Program Staff plays an essential role in leading community outreach, client recruitment, and creative initiatives aimed at raising awareness about gender-based violence with newcomers, its impacts, and prevention strategies. This position will also involve facilitating group programs tailored to newcomer clients, helping them understand their rights and navigate their new environment while addressing issues related to GBV. Through both awareness-raising workshops and group programming, the staff will support the prevention of GBV and provide vital resources to at-risk populations.
In this role, you will:
- Lead culturally sensitive and trauma-informed activities, workshops, and programs for newcomer clients of all ages to raise awareness on: GBV, laws, rights, prevention themes and supports and services
- Facilitate both gender-inclusive client programs and provide gender specific programs to women and girls
- Develop, implement and support recruitment plans and efforts to ensure active participation and attendance of sessions
- Design and create promotional materials in the form of posters, videos, social media posts to recruit clients
- Organize all logistics for programs including booking venues, preparing materials, set up and cleaning up of spaces and documenting attendance
- Order supplies and gather materials for client activities, prepare monthly calendars, and prepare expenses
- Complete reports, data tracking and feedback from participants around service experiences to identify areas for improvement
- Create opportunities where newcomers can engage in sharing their own wisdom, skills, and ideas to be part of prevention and awareness
- Offer follow-up resources (reading materials or additional exercises) to help participants continue their learning after the workshop
- Collaborate across YMCA programs to deliver place-based programming to meet newcomer clients needs
Education and Skills Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of Gender-Based Violence, prevention and best practices
- Lived experience as a newcomer who can bring their wisdom, experience and knowledge to this position and/or experience working directly with newcomers
- Awareness of 2SLGBTQIA+ identities and experiences and working around creating safer, more inclusive spaces, including leading programs that challenge homophobia and transphobia
- Knowledge in applying: Trauma and violence informed, anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices. Capacity to create a safer and inclusive space for discussion and learning
- Excellent outreach skills and experience promoting and recruiting for programs
- Experience in adult education, workshop facilitation, and curriculum development
- Strong youth engagement, program design and facilitation skills with youth
- Excellent presentation, engagement, and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences including age ranges, different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and genders
- Experience in developing participatory programming for groups of youth and/or adults
- Strong cross-cultural verbal and written communication and presentation skills
- Intermediately advanced tech skills in using Microsoft Office, CANVA, social media, Zoom
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, gender studies, adult education or public health are considered an asset or equivalent education and experiences
- Having a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle is an asset
- Speaking other languages is considered a strong asset
- Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends to accommodate programs needs
