ADÌTS’ÀT TR’INIINJII (BUILD YOURSELF UP) COORDINATOR
Inuvik, Aklavik, Tsiigehtchic, Teet?’it Zheh F/T (37.5 hours per week)
The Gwich'in Tribal Council (GTC), located in lnuvik, Northwest Territories, is seeking candidates for the role of Adìts’àt Tr’iniinjii Coordinator in each GSA community.
Responsible for delivering culturally relevant and land-based health and wellness programs that promote wellness in their community. The position collaborates with Gwich’in Tribal Council (GTC) Health & Wellness staff, and other Departments, as well as other service delivery agencies in Northwest Territories, to provide quality programs and referral services to clients and their families.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead Culturally Focused Land-Based Healing Programs
· Develop and deliver programs for individuals and groups of all ages with the opportunity to explore their unique cultural identity.
· Provides individual, couple, family, and group sessions and culturally based educational programs.
· Provide information on substance use, mental health/wellness and healthy families through presentations, informational workshops, and resource materials in a culturally relevant way.
Case-Management
· Maintain an appropriate record and information system and ensure that confidentiality is a priority.
· Assist in creating and maintaining an environment of safety and wellness in the programming areas.
· Identifying client needs and supporting client decisions regarding the need for connection to applicable prevention, education or other additional resources related to mental health/wellness, substance use, or healthy families.
· Use a team approach to ensure clients are connected to the best resource(s) to meet their needs especially during times of crisis and trauma.
Health Promotion and Prevention
· Lead the delivery of culturally relevant educational, awareness, wellness promotion, and prevention programs and activities in the areas of cultural awareness, mental health/wellness, substance use, and healthy families.
· Provide input to the development of prevention materials and methods for use within GTC land-based healing camps and aftercare programming.
· External engagement with Participants to the GCLCA, Gwich’in Councils, industry and government on issues relating to land and resource management in the GSR.
Aftercare
· Participate in collaborative development of community-based aftercare programs bringing knowledge of cultural, land-based and community practices and methods.
· Deliver aftercare programming to clients involved with GTC land-based programs, to those who may have attended healing camps or treatment delivered by other agencies.
Additional Duties
· Collaborate with community Elders, cultural resource people and others as may be required.
· Actively participate in team and staff meetings, and engage in on-going team planning, program development and evaluation.
COMPETENCIES
The Key Competencies required for this position include:
· Leadership – ability to perform culturally-based health promotion activities in the area of mental health/wellness, substance use and healthy families. Facilitation of individual and group learning using a client-centered approach.
· Knowledge – knowledge of Gwich’in Values, beliefs and practices, and ability to represent these in their daily work. Understanding of land-based healing and Gwich’in wellness practices along with the effects of colonization, especially through residential schools and its impacts on communities, families, and individuals.
· Confidentiality – maintenance of confidentiality and handling of sensitive information related to case management of individuals and families.
· Communication – ability to relate to clients and families in a trauma-informed, culturally safe, empathetic, strengths-based, identity-affirming, and respectful manner. Demonstrates skills in relationship building and working collaboratively and cooperatively as an effective team member.
· Mentorship – acts as a role model of healthy positive living and mentor to members within the community and other staff. Recognizes instances of lateral violence, bullying and other behaviours that impact social cohesiveness and take appropriate steps to address the situation using a trauma-informed approach.
· Organization – good organizational and time management skills. Demonstrates ability to complete tasks or projects on-time through routine planning of own work and organization of resources.
· Logistics – ability to work in a cross-cultural environment and work flexible hours. Some work on evenings and weekends may be required
QUALIFICATIONS
The qualifications required for this position include:
· Diploma in the Social Sciences field with a minimum of one (1) year of experience in the delivery of mental health, addictions, and wellness services.
· Alternatively, having relevant lived experience for a minimum of three (3) years in Northern Indigenous communities.
· Proficient in a Microsoft Office operating environment (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, OneNote), Email, Database application and Internet;
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; and,
· Ability to maintain composure and performance while under stress or pressure.
The qualifications desired for this position also include:
· Strong awareness of cultural diversity and Northern Indigenous values and practices;
· Fluency in the Gwich’in language; and,
· General understanding of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement.
COMPENSATION
A competitive compensation plan will accompany the successful candidate including a comprehensive benefit plan.
Preference may be given to candidates who are Gwich'in Participants and have experience working in the non-profit or public sectors or in an Indigenous Government/Organization, preferably in a northern context.
