Reporting to:   Transfer Station Manager


Summary of Duties:

The Transfer Station Operator is responsible for ensuring the transfer station location is always operating in a safe and tidy manner while assisting customers in a friendly and professional manner.


Key Deliverables and Expectations:

Ensure Transfer Station location and surrounding area are tidy and accessible to the public, including clearing debris, snow, and ice removal, and managing spills and airborne waste.

Oversees the entire operation of the Transfer Station location, including but not limited to:

      o Greet and direct users to proper dumping and recycling areas

      o Inspect customer items for prohibited waste

      o Take scale measurements upon customer entry and exit

      o Accurately process cash and credit card transactions for applicable tipping fees

      o Assist customers using the Free Store

      o Secure food waste and garbage management

      o Management of all bins and the proper separation of recycling and garbage

      o Proper management of hazardous items

Oversees the collection and delivery of materials as contracted at off site locations:

      o Management of all bins and the proper separation of recycling and garbage, including but not limited to, The Lil’wat Chevron, and Hitching Post Motel

      o Safe disposal of items as directed, including but not limited to, recyclable goods, contaminated products, and technology 

Operating of the compactor bins, food waste transfer bins, cardboard bailers, and mini-loader

Safe removal of refrigerant and proper storage, following Refrigerant Recovery Technician training

Traffic and vehicle flow management and cleanliness (free of debris or clutter) on roadways

Cleaning of bins and daily site clean-up, maintaining a clean and tidy facility

Data management and required record-keeping of recycling, garbage, and other waste

Provides good customer service, clear instructions, and education for users

Will assist customers with sorting materials.

Follows all safety protocols and ensures safety is a key priority

Performs ongoing site maintenance and general duties

Perform other related duties as requested


Experience and Attributes: 

First Aid Certificate

Training in solid waste management

Previous experience with operating small equipment (manual forklift, compactor, mini loader) and hand tools

Previous experience or understanding of hazardous material management

Refrigerant Removal Training an asset

Familiar with basic computer knowledge

Strong communication skills - able to understand direction, able to communicate tasks, able to educate and share knowledge with staff and customers

Physically fit and mobile, able to lift up to 50 lbs and be on feet all day, able to conduct manual labour, can work outside in variable conditions.

Proven ability to work in a busy, fast-paced environment and manages stress effectively

Able to prioritize daily tasks and can manage multiple priorities at a time

Strong attention to safety and following all safety protocols

Team player - willing to help team members

BC Driver’s Licence and a Clear Driving Abstract is an Asset
