Manager of Communications

Victoria, BC Full-time $77700.00-$86300.00/year

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Manager of Communications leads internal and external communications and plays an important role in working with our many community partners.   


We are looking for a results-oriented self-starter, a communications generalist with strong writing skills, an eye for graphic design and a strong familiarity with social media. The Manager of Communications, will oversee all Beacon Community Service’s communications materials, including website and social media content, lead our media relations, and implement the organization’s strategic communications plan. They will also develop program and project-specific communication strategies to support effective communication of new and existing programs.  


With over 300 passionate employees and 600 volunteers, internal communications are essential to delivering on our purpose. This role will help ensure our entire Beacon Community Services team of staff and volunteers is aware of the great work happening across the organization.  


As a strong community partner delivering a range of care services across the Capital Region, the Manager of Communications will work closely with partner agencies to coordinate communications and share updates on important services with our broader community.

Days/Hours of Work: Monday to Friday 37.5 hours per week. Evening and weekend availability will be required for special events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Support leadership team and program areas with various communications needs 
  • Develop a strong understanding of our services and the communities we serve 
  • Communications planning, writing, and editing including speaking remarks, public relations responses, media materials, social media, and website content  
  • Implement external and internal communications priorities outlined in the strategic communications plan 
  • Develop materials that effectively communicate and engage various audiences 
  • Maintain annual communications calendar of activities and events  
  • Website management using the publishing platform WordPress 
  • Develop engaging content and monitor various social media platforms  
  • Oversee brand standards and graphic templates to ensure consistent and professional presentation of Beacon information  
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with staff, partner agencies, news media and contractors  
  • Support internal communications activities (e.g., e-newsletters, employee events, program updates) 
  • Assist with surveys and compile data on client, employee and volunteer perspectives and feedback 
  • Evaluate and report on communications activities 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • 5+ years’ experience working in communications  
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, business, or related field of study  
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro, Canva, photo and video editing software  
  • Experience with social media platforms and channels (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Hootsuite etc.) 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Strong organizational skills  
  • Creative thinker 
  • Exemplary writing and verbal presentation skills  
  • Media relations experience and ability to establish strong relationships with news media  
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment  
  • Graphic design skills would be an asset
