Summary of Duties:

Under the direction of the Director of Human Resources, the Senior Human Resources Generalist serves as senior HR practitioner and a trusted advisor to leadership, with a primary focus on employee and labour relations. The role provides expert guidance that supports organizational effectiveness and employee well-being by working in alignment with the Lil’wat Nation’s values , cultural teaching and community priorities. The position manages complex employee relations matters and supports performance management, workplace investigations, recruitment, accommodations and return to work process, compensation and classification, HRIS, , organisational change and other HR initiatives. As a member of HR team, this role supports the HR director in mentoring HR team members and partners with leaders across the organization to deliver effective, people-centered HR services.

Key Deliverables and Expectations:

Employee Relations
  • Serve as the lead resource for complex employee relations matters under the direction of the Director of HR.
  • Manage employee complaints, workplace conflict, performance concerns, conduct issues, and other sensitive employee matters, and escalate significant risks and recommended disciplinary or employment actions to the Director of Human Resources.
  • Advise and coach managers on employee relations, corrective action, performance management, and workplace best practices.
  • Conduct workplace investigations, including planning, interviews, evidence review, report writing, and recommendations, in consultation with the Director of HR where appropriate
  • Apply a trauma-informed, culturally safe, and relationship-based approach to employee support and conflict resolution.
  • Identify workplace risks and recommend appropriate solutions while maintaining accurate and legally defensible documentation.
Performance Management
  • Lead and support performance management processes across the organization.
  • Guide managers on performance expectations, documentation, performance improvement plans, and corrective action.
  • Review performance-related documentation for consistency, compliance, and best practice.
  • Support leaders in addressing complex employee performance issues.
Leave Management, Accommodation and Return to Work
  • Provide guidance regarding sick leave, medical leave, bereavement leave, and other employee leaves in accordance with applicable policies and legislation.
  • Coordinate workplace accommodation, disability-management, modified-duty, and return-to-work processes.
  • Review appropriate medical or functional information and develop documented accommodation or return-to-work plans while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Monitor complex cases and escalate significant operational, legal, or accommodation risks to the Director of Human Resources.
Compensation and Classification
  • Coordinate job-description reviews and updates with managers.
  • Support position evaluation, salary-grid placement, compensation administration, and related recommendations.
  • Prepare compensation, status-change, and employment-amendment documentation following the required approvals.
  • Assist with compensation-review implementation and maintenance of accurate classification records.
Recruitment & Talent Acquisition
  • Support full-cycle recruitment, including developing job postings, candidate sourcing, screening, interviews, reference checks, offers, and employment contracts.
  • Work with managers on recruitment strategies, workforce planning, onboarding, internal transfers, and offboarding.
  • Participate in candidate assessments and provide hiring recommendations as required.
HR Administration & HRIS
  • Administer and maintain HRIS records and employee data.
  • Process employee change forms, employment status updates, reporting changes, benefits administration, and related transactions.
  • Prepare and maintain employment documentation, including offers, contracts, probationary reviews, accommodation records, disciplinary correspondence, and termination documentation.
  • Coordinate job description reviews and updates with managers.
  • Ensure employee records are complete, accurate, secure, and compliant.
HR Programs & Operational Support
  • Assist with HR reporting, metrics, budgeting, systems administration, projects, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support the development and implementation of HR policies, procedures, and employee programs.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable legislation, including the Canada Labour Code, applicable employment standards legislation, and human rights requirements.
  • Assist with onboarding HR staff and provide team lead support when required
  • Coordinate training activities and attend OHS meetings as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience and Attributes:

  • Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration, Industrial Relations, Public Administration, Organizational Communication, or a related field. or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • CPHR designation is an asset.
  • 5–7 years of progressive HR experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex employee relations matters, workplace investigations, conflict resolution, performance management, and progressive discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of the Canada Labour Code, employment standards, human rights, workplace accommodation, and employment law, or transferrable experience with other similar legislation.
  • Experience in federally regulated, Indigenous, public sector, social service, government, or similarly complex organizations is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with employees and leaders while exercising sound judgment and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Strong analytical, interviewing, investigation, report-writing, and documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and culturally safe approaches to workplace relationships.
  • Understanding of Indigenous governance and appreciation for Líl̓wat Nation values, traditions, and community priorities.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence with a satisfactory driver’s abstract, with reliable transportation
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including vulnerable sector screening if required).
