Reporting to the Plant Superintendent, the Chief Metallurgist is responsible for metallurgy and process functions, overseeing ore processing activities from design to operation. He or she will lead the metallurgy team and be responsible for monitoring and optimizing the performance of ore processing, concentrator, tonnage, and recovery processes to ensure profitability. The work schedule will consist of five consecutive working days, Monday through Friday, followed by two days off (5/2), in hybrid mode, with frequent visits to the Montreal office during the project planning phase and sporadic visits to the Windfall site. The schedule and work location will be modified during the execution phase to require on-site presence on a 7-7 schedule.
Duties and responsibilities
•Develop and lead the metallurgy team by promoting a culture of health, safety, and performance;
•Assume technical leadership for mineral processing applications, including commissioning and ongoing operational support;
•Supervise metallurgical accounting, production forecasting, budgetary activities and reagent management for the processing plant;
•Develop, coordinate, and interpret metallurgical testwork, plant trials, and technical studies to optimize performance and drive innovation;
•Drive problem-solving, continuous improvement initiatives, and process optimization activities to maximize recovery, throughput, and profitability;
•Design and implement process improvement strategies for increased recovery, throughput and efficiency;
•Track and interpret process data to detect trends, resolve issues, and identify opportunities for improvement;
•Evaluate, select and implement advanced technologies, equipment, and methods to enhance performance;
•Distribute resources efficiently to reach production objectives and maintain quality requirements;
•Assist long-term planning and development of metallurgical projects to support business growth.
•Oversee the assay laboratory and metallurgical technicians: prioritize, assign tasks, arrange staffing and training, conduct performance evaluations, and develop metallurgical technicians;
•Produce and deliver technical reports, operational budgets, procurement documentation, and summary for management and stakeholders;
•Support environmental management with water balance management, reagent optimization, and sustainable operation practices;
•Conduct and support audits, operational readiness assessments, and strategic planning activities related to site development and process improvement;
•Act as a technical expert, mentor, and champion for metallurgical excellence across operations;
•Enforce compliance with all safety, health, environmental, and regulatory requirements over all processing activities;
•Perform any other duties related to the position of Chief Metallurgist that are relevant to the success of the operation.
Required qualifications
•Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, metallurgy, or mining;
•More than 10 years of relevant experience in mining or industrial settings and in mining or plant operations management, preferably in a gold mining context;
•Minimum of 3 years of team management experience;
•Valid Class 5 driver's license;
•Bilingualism (will be required to meet with partnership leaders and English-speaking suppliers/consultants).
Technical skills
•Experience in implementing best practices and continuous improvement;
•Excellent knowledge of the mining industry, industry practices, and technical advances;
•Excellent knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to mining sites;
•Experience in data and process analysis (financial and operational);
•Experience in integrated operations management centers (an asset);
•Knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Excel, Outlook, etc.).
