POSITION SUMMARY

As an Auntie/Uncle (Indigenous Cultural Support Provider), you will support, develop and connect program participants with opportunities to engage in cultural and ceremonial ways of life. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties and responsibilities of the Auntie/Uncle include but are not limited to:

  • Following the guidance of the Knowledge Keeper, take an active role in creating and supporting opportunities for program participants to engage in ceremonial, land-based and cultural experiences.  
  • Under the guidance of the Knowledge Keeper, host, support and/or participate in ceremonies and events in the First Nations community, as well as those hosted by The Link. 
  • At the request of the Knowledge Keeper, organize and facilitate experiences centered on wellness, including but not limited to sharing circles, drumming, smudging, and the harvesting and preparing of medicines. 
  • Share culturally responsive feedback with participants and their care providers. 
  • Identify opportunities for training and development to increase responsiveness to the needs of program participants. 
  • Engage program participants in honoring and celebrating their distinct heritage and experience.
  • Provide assistance and support for program participants in individual and group settings. 
  • Assist in the coordination and delivery of services, calendars, posters, emails, resources, and other administration duties as requested. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with a traditional way of life and protocol; knowledgeable of First Nations teachings, experience participating and/or attending ceremony, experience being a helper to ceremony, experience with sharing circles, drumming, and other culturally based activities.
  • Pride in your identity as a First Nations person.
  • Optimally, three years’ experience in a related role and supporting individuals living in residential facilities
  • The ability to work on a flexible schedule that primarily includes days, with possibly evening or weekend based on activities and events. 
  • Awareness and understanding of Harm Reduction principles and approaches.
  • Good communication skills and strong ability to connect with people. 
  • The ability to speak a First Nations language is a definite asset.
  • Ability to build strong, positive and professional relationships with others.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the history of Canada and the impact on First Nations communities. 
  • Knowledge of the 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Report, Calls to Justice for the MMIW&G including 2SLGBTQQIA People and United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People.
  • Ability to present a Satisfactory Child and Adult Abuse Registry check
  • Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector search) and a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract and Driver’s License.
  • Hold a valid First Aid CPR Certificate or be willing to complete this. 
  • A safe and reliable vehicle with proof of appropriate insurance on vehicle (at least $2 Million, Third Party Liability)

SALARY: $22.00 to $23.50 per hour based upon qualifications

HOURS OF WORK: Full-Time, 35 hours per week or Casual including Days, Evenings and Weekends 

NUMBER OF POSITIONS: One (1) Full time or Casual Permanent position
