Exempt Captain
Northumberland Ferries Limited, regional leader in the transportation industry, is seeking an Exempt Captain, Non-Union, to work onboard our vessels that operate from the ports of Wood Islands, PE, and Caribou, NS. The Exempt Captain will be responsible for the Safe Navigation, and the ship handling of the vessel for the docking and undocking multiple times daily. The captain has overall responsibility to implement the Company’s Management System as per the ISM Code on board the ship that is under their command.
Education, Experience and Certification:
The ideal candidate will have experience in navigating Ro-Pax vessels in confined or narrow water ways and in shallow water. Experience with Azimuth thrusters, Controllable Pitch Propellers and Becker Flap Rudders.
- Master, Near Coastal Certificate of Competency or higher.
- Continued Proficiency Endorsement.
- Seafarers Medical Certificate.
- Radio Operator Certificate.
- Certificates of Proficiency in STCW Basic Safety, Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats, and Advanced Fire Fighting.
- Continuous Certificate of Discharge (Discharge Book).
- Specialized Passenger Safety Management (Certificate or Endorsement).
Key Accountabilities: Specific Management System responsibilities include:
- Implementing the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy.
- Motivating the crew to observe and execute the policy.
- Issuing appropriate orders and instructions clearly and simply.
- Regularly reviewing and updating the Company’s Management System and reporting deficiencies to shore-based management.
- Reporting hazardous occurrences and accidents and ensuring measures to prevent reoccurrence are identified and implemented.
- Ensuring crew compliance with safe working practices and procedures.
- Conducting monthly health and safety meetings.
- Conducting Daily Toolbox Talks with crew.
- Encouraging crew to report near-misses by supporting a culture that does not focus on blame.
- Performing risk assessments and job hazard analyses to ensure safe shipboard operating practices and procedures are in place.
- Maintain current records of training and crew certifications.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge of vessel operating processes, procedures, and technology.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- WHMIS is required (Company provided training).
- Accessibility training is required (Company provided training).
- Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention Training is required (Company provided training).
