Facilities Assistant (Full-Time, Permanent)

Building a community of hope since 1987, we would like to invite you to join our journey. Siloam Mission is currently seeking for a permanent fulltime Facilities Assistant.
POSITION DUTIES
Repairs
- Assist the Facilities Manager in developing an ongoing list of repairs that are needed, and prioritizing them
- Ensure that walls are kept in good repair throughout the building, patching and re-painting as necessary
- Replace light bulbs as needed throughout the building
- Continuously suggest the best way to complete repairs, connecting with tradespeople if necessary
- Be fiscally responsible and endeavor to find the balance between quality and frugality
Maintenance
- Regular maintenance and upkeep to ensure mechanical aspects such as the boiler and A/C units continue functioning correctly
- Perform daily rounds and log readings as requested by Facilities Manager;
- Complete preventive/demand maintenance tasks; input histories if required;
- Complete filter changes;
- Complete belt inspection/replacement;
- Maintain/align fan/air handling units;
- Assist Facilities Manager in completing general mechanical/maintenance duties;
- Assist Facilities Manager in complete maintenance of metal/plastic pipe systems
- Assist Facilities Manager in conducting chemical treatment tests;
- Perform minor repairs: replace washers/faucets; clear sinks, toilets and drains; clear grease traps/sumps; replace pumps/motors; reset breakers, etc.
Projects
- Assist Facilities Manager in developing creative solutions for staff needs to make their work space more efficient. (shelving etc.)
- Keep an eye out for things that may be inefficient or could use development and find creative solutions, consulting with Facilities Manager for larger projects
- Schedule and coordinate contractors with completion targets as required by Facilities Manager
- Provide quality control supervision to contractors as required by Facilities Manager
- Ensure safety controls are followed
Work Area
- Keep maintenance work area clean and utilize space given to maintenance efficiently
- Ensure that tools are properly cared for and safely stored
Other
- Makes minor carpentry, electrical, mechanical and plumbing repairs;
- Uses hand and power tools in making minor repairs and maintaining grounds and walks;
- Assists other facilities personnel in conducting routine mechanical maintenance;
- Assists other facilities personnel in undertaking major repairs and renovations;
- Sets and tears down chairs, tables and equipment in meeting and function rooms as requested;
- Clears snow from entrances and walkways;
- Provides assistance to other staff, volunteers and visitors as necessary;
- Works with and supervises volunteers when required;
- Participates in building coverage by being part of an on-call rotation team for evenings and weekends as required;

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High School Graduate
- Full Valid Class 5 Driver's License
- Familiarity with Building Code, Electrical Code, Plumbing Code, Mechanical Code;
- Knowledge of Workplace Safety and Health Act, as well as other compliance codes;
ADDITIONAL
- Work Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
- Work Location: 300 Princess Street & 210 Evanson Street
- Employee will be required to be on-call on a rotating basis.
- Starting wage is $41,600/year and up depending on experience.
Clear Vulnerable Sector Check and Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check will be required.
RELATIONSHIP
· Working closely with managers, supervisors and directors in all areas and sites of Siloam Mission;
· Working with vendors, and contractors;
WORKING CONDITION
· Ability to work in all weather conditions; temperatures; and seasons;
· Ability to complete repairs on rooftops as well as on the ground;
· Ability to work in dusty, dirty, small, cramped areas, damp, wet, muddy;
· Capacity to climb ladders using fall protection safety measures when necessary;
· On call rotation of one (1) week every three (3) weeks;
- Must have a valid Class 5F driver’s license, a clear driver abstract, a vehicle in good condition;
WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY
The incumbent contributes to making the organization safe for clients and staff and recognizes the importance of reporting unsafe situations and participating in follow up reviews as a learning opportunity.
- Provides a safe environment by ensuring adherences to Workplace Safety and Health
- Regulations and Policies, Infection Control Guidelines, WHMIS and Safe Work Procedures. Immediately investigates and recommends corrective action on any unsafe acts, work conditions, incidents, near misses, injuries or illnesses.
- Demonstrates understanding of role and responsibilities in fire prevention and disaster preparedness and participates in safety and health training programs including the facility’s Fire, Disaster and Evacuation Plan.
- Supports an environment which avoids, prevents and corrects all activities or actions which may result in an adverse outcome in the delivery of services. Community Member safety is a standing item for all individual and departmental meetings.
