Withdrawal Management Services Support Worker (Full Time)

Winnipeg, MB Full-time $20.03-$22.54/hour

Main Street Project provides Withdrawal Management Services to individuals at two locations: 75 Martha and River Point. The primary purpose of our two facilities is to help participants begin their recovery journey through detox stabilization that decreases risk, supports accessing long term treatment programs, managing external recovery needs through advocacy, and expanding resource capacity.

Both sites provide 24-hour support in a safe and stable environment at no cost the participant. Prior to admission, all participants must receive a medical clearance which provides a narrative of how Main Street Project Staff can support a participants time in the unit. 

Main Street Project Staff conduct regular check-ins with clients regarding their plans, goals and physical, emotional and spiritual well-being and assist with the creation of individualized detox care plans to support and guide their individual recovery – whether it is reducing the harm they may experience from their drug of choice or continuing treatment if abstinence is their goal. 

In accordance with Main Street Project mission, goals, policies and procedures, the Withdrawal Management Support Worker functions as a member of a team in providing services designed to assist and support all who enter the program with respect, dignity, and the goals of the participant always in mind. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engage in intake coordination and review for incoming participants of MSP Withdrawal Management Program
  • Oversee intake into Withdrawal Management services including the review of medical clearance forms, completion of intake assessment forms, and medication confirmation and review
  • Medication administration, tracking, and monitoring
  • Work in collaboration in medical health scenarios with MSP Nurse Practitioner and internal WFPS resources.  
  • Relationship building including one on one check-in’s and documentation relating to each participant on the unit. 
  • Support implementation of programming within the unit including participation  
  • Advocation and referral assistance for participants to internal MSP Case Management program and external services and resources based on the participants self determined goals
  • Assist participants in planning, problem-solving, and addressing immediate needs, including providing meals, clothing, and hygiene supplies. 
  • Provide support and resources without judgement for participants
  • Respond to emergency situations; assessing, intervening, and documenting critical incidents including requesting assistance when needed or when incident escalates beyond scope of role based on Main Street Projects Policy and Procedures
  • Ensure participants are informed of internal and external resources, services, and programs and if needed
  • Ensure care provided meets professional standards 
  • Work collaboratively and professionally with all external partners
  • Maintain accurate and confidential electronic and paper file records
  • Collect and submit agency-required statistics on time and with accuracy
  • Maintain cleanliness of the program area by following routine cleaning schedules each shift

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant experience working in the field of human services preferably with adults experiencing homelessness, mental health and substance use issues
  • Post secondary education in the field of addictions and mental health is considered an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records. 
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with external partners
  • Compassion for working with individuals who use substances and experience mental health issues
  • Ability to work with a participant-centred care philosophy
  • Ability to apply Harm Reduction and Housing First philosophies in their day-to-day support of participants
  • Knowledge of the effects of poverty and the determinants to health
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a mutli-disciplinary team
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Culture
  • Knowledge and the ability to apply the principles of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, MMIWG Calls to Justice, and UNDRIP
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both oral and written
  • An understanding/experience in working with culturally diverse populations 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office & online databases
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Mental Health First Aid, ASSIST and CPR First Aid certifications are considered an asset 
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Clear Vulnerable Sector Search and a Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check are required. Employee is responsible for any service charges incurred

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Ability to meet to the physical demands required for the role including being on your feet for long period of time, lifting up to 50 lbs, and cleaning duties (bending, reaching, push/pulling, crouching)
  • Exposure to biohazards including but not limited to blood, bodily fluids, and syringes 
  • Ability to work with individuals who use substances and/or experience mental health issues 
  • Ability to provide support in high intensity incidents including but not limited to medical emergencies and aggressive individuals
  • Comfortable working in environment where Indigenous ceremonies and practices are actively taking place including Smudging
  • Ability to assist in the providing first aid when required 
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Clear Vulnerable Sector Search and a Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check are required.
