Water Resources Engineer
Biohabitats is seeking a Water Resources Engineer with an understanding of regional ecology and experience in nature-based design and/or ecological restoration to join our Chesapeake / Delaware Bays team in Baltimore, MD.
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, analytical, and engineering skills that can be applied to a variety of projects including planning studies and water quality modeling for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) compliance, in-field ecological assessments, restoration design development and analysis, and preparation of design plans and construction documents. The successful candidate will work with our multidisciplinary team of scientists, landscape architects, and engineers to support watershed planning, ecological restoration, conservation, climate adaptation and resiliency, and environmental justice work for government, private, and non-governmental organizations.

Role and Responsibilities
- Supporting a range of planning and design projects for NPDES MS4 Compliance; stream, wetland, and shoreline restoration; climate resilience; and stormwater management and green infrastructure design.
- Creating site-specific concept designs.
- Preparing design drawings, construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Providing construction phase services (e.g., bid support, construction observation).
- Conducting natural resources and watershed inventories and field assessments.
- Supporting Chesapeake/Delaware Bays Bioregion business development activities.
Required Skills, Experience, and Knowledge
- Experienced with Chesapeake Bay and local Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) and NPDES compliance and associated water quality modeling (e.g., CAST, TIPP).
- Professional experience related to shoreline restoration, climate resilience, stormwater management, and green infrastructure projects.
- Applied experience leading aspects of design projects from concept through construction drawings and implementation.
- Proficient in the use of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling programs (e.g., TR-55/TR-20, HEC-RAS, SWMM, HydroCAD). Ability to conduct storm drain capacity analysis.
- Proficient in the use of AutoCAD and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to support or lead field assessments under a variety of weather and site conditions.
- Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, team environment.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
Preferred Skills, Experience, and Knowledge
- Professional experience related to stream and wetland restoration projects.
- Coastal systems and modeling knowledge and experience.
- Geomorphic assessment knowledge and experience.
- Proficient in the use of ArcGIS.
- Restoration construction oversight experience.
- Familiarity with structural BMP maintenance, dredging, and riser design requirements.
- Familiarity with dam safety programs and requirements.
- Willingness to periodically travel to the Great Lakes Bioregion.
Education
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in relevant engineering field (e.g., Civil, Environmental, Biological Systems or Ecological Engineering)
Years of Relevant Experience
10-15 years of relevant experience as a Water Resources Engineer
Professional Registration
PE or ability to obtain through reciprocity within six months of hire date
Salary Range
$110,000 - $120,000
