Position title: Volunteer and Community Engagement Associate

Reports to: Volunteer and Community Engagement Supervisor

Classification: Full Time, Non-Exempt

Opening Doors began in 1993 as a small refugee resettlement agency, and today serves 2,000 clients per year across our 5 program areas: Refugee Programs, Survivors of Trafficking Programs, Immigration Legal Services, Health Programs, and Economic Prosperity Programs.

Responsibilities: The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include the following. Other duties may be assigned at the sole discretion of the organization:


Community Engagement

• Support External Affairs team’s community outreach and volunteer recruitment activities by identifying new outreach opportunities and supporting the facilitation of relationships with community-based organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, and other stakeholders.

• Work with Volunteer and Community Engagement Supervisor to coordinate preparation of outreach materials, coordinate speaking engagements, and assist Volunteer and Community Engagement Supervisor in representing Opening Doors at community outreach opportunities.


Volunteer and Donation Coordination

• Support Opening Doors’ strategies to recruit and retain qualified volunteers/interns with the appropriate abilities and aptitudes.

• Support ODI’s volunteerism program by conducting orientation and other trainings, deploying volunteers and interns in compliance with organization’s procedures, and tracking volunteer hours and in-kind contributions in donor database.

• Manage in-kind donations from individual, corporate, and community donors, including solicitation of in-kind goods and distribution of donations to program managers or clients.

• Manage storage of in-kind donations in offsite storage facility.

• Other duties as assigned.


Marketing & Communications/Brand Management

• Assists with social media storytelling and analysis.

• Works with Communications Manager to effectively manage the ODI brand across all agency materials: marketing, outreach, program.


Required Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required.


• Demonstrated expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software programs as needed.

• Excellent interpersonal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with current and prospective donors, volunteers, partner agencies, multi-cultural clients and colleagues.

• Comfort and ability to speak in front of, present to, and train large groups.

• Excellent writing skills and the ability to write for multiple audiences.

• A minimum of one year of experience in fund development, volunteer coordination, customer service, or other similar roles.

• Strong organizational skills in a complex, multi-tasking environment and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

• Ability to maintain regular, timely, and ongoing electronic and phone contact with varied stakeholders, including volunteers, donors, clients, and staff.

• Detail-oriented with a high degree of reliability in managing data and records using Microsoft Excel and/or Google spreadsheets.

• Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the greater Sacramento region required.


Preferred qualifications: The requirements listed below are not required but are desired.


• A minimum of two years of experience in community outreach, volunteer coordination, or other similar roles.

• Familiarity with social media content creation, scheduling, and analysis.

• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, CMS/WordPress, and/or multimedia and video editing software.

• Skilled writer with a passion for ethical storytelling.

• Fluency in Farsi, Pashto, Russian, Dari, Spanish, or other languages and cultures of the local refugee population.


Physical requirements and work environment: The following demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Volunteer and Community Engagement Associate position. While performing this job, the employee is required to sit often and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel and manipulate keys on a keyboard, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, lift approximately 25 pounds on occasion, and to stoop, kneel, or squat, and drive on occasion. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
