Job Summary

Reporting to a Child Safety Team Leader, the Transportation Support Worker is an integral link in our continuity of service by ensuring safe access to visitation which strengthens families and provides enhanced permanency and well-being through relationships. The Transportation Support Worker will support social workers within the Child Safety Program providing transportation services for children and youth to and from pre-arranged visitation sites. This position will require communication and documentation with all points of contact including the following:  social workers, parents, and caregivers to facilitate transportation support. This position will also support the agency with similar transportation duties as required. The delegated social worker or Team Leader retains full decision-making responsibility.

Key functional areas of this position include transportation of children, youth, and families by vehicle, ensuring a vehicle is in good condition prior to driving, attending meetings, regular communication with social workers, team leaders, parents and or caregivers, as well as active participation in the Agency’s health and safety program. Some duties include:

  • Receives drive requests and reviews assigned schedules and documents transportation of clients. Confirms rides with caregivers, parents, and other(s).
  • Operates a motor vehicle by providing transportation including pick-up and drop-off at the direction of the social worker for the children and/or families to designated places for their visits. These could include the biological family’s residence, a relative’s home, an office, pre-determined visitation site, a residential facility, or other specified locations, including sites outside the child’s city of residence.
  • Visits can occur during weekdays, weeknights, holidays, and weekends at a time mutually agreed upon by the social worker, caregiver, and child’s parent(s).
  • Receives drive requests and reviews assigned schedules and documents transportation of clients.
  • Ensure children are received safely by appropriate staff at the designated location(s).
  • Always ensure safety of vehicle including obeying traffic laws, road safety, parking restrictions, checking wheelchairs and child restraints are secured, and managing problems and emergencies that arise in accordance with established guidelines.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Required:

·  Grade 12 required.

·  Minimum 2 years of Class 4 driving experience.

·  Experience working in the human service field.

·   Good computer skills and ability to navigate the internet and navigation systems.

·  Excellent time management and organizational skills.

·  Demonstrated driver safety.

·  Proper car seat fitting.

·  Pace of work is controlled by set schedules; often faced with multiple demands with very tight time pressures to finish pickups and drop-offs; works in all weather conditions.

Preferred:

·  Certificate or Diploma in a related human/social service field.

·  Child care experience with infants, toddlers and school age children.

·  Transporting infants and children in care as well as their sibling groups.

Note:

  • A valid Class 4 BC Driver’s license with no restrictions a clear driver’s abstract are required for this position. The driver’s abstract will be requested as part of the referencing process. A clean record that does not exhibit serious offences will be required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • First Aid – training available.
  • This position requires Union membership.
