Summary:

The Childcare Assistant, Children's Summer Drop-In creates a welcoming and safe environment for the participants of Thyme Second Stage Program (Thyme). The Children's Drop-In Program is operated by the Children's Support Worker and provides year-round support and activities to children who have experienced or been exposed to violence and/or abuse. Come summer, additional assistance with activities and implementation of the program benefits families when school-aged children are out of school. The Childcare Assistant reports to Thyme Second Stage Program Lead.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports the implementation of a children's summer program at Thyme Second Stage for up to 12 children, 1 to 16 years old
  • Welcomes and orients children to the program so they feel safe and at ease by providing opportunities to identify, express and understand their feelings regarding violence and family separation.
  • Leads activities with children including arts and crafts, face painting, drama, cooperative games, and sports activities
  • Maintains equipment and informs senior staff of need for repairs
  • Maintains inside and outside play areas ensuring areas are clean, safe, and organized
  • Assists the Children's Support Worker in supervising children and maintaining their safety while on community outings
  • Under close supervision, helps children resolve conflicts peacefully and addresses challenging behaviours appropriately with children
  • Prepares snacks for children
  • Reinforces the Children's Drop-In program guidelines with children including informing senior staff of any areas of concern with children and/or mothers
  • Ensures effective service delivery consistent with agency mandate, policy, meeting all legal, contractual, financial and other compliance requirements
  • Assists with other duties as required, from time to time, aiding with the efficient operation of the organization
  • Attends weekly team meetings to enhance service delivery
  • Supports the mission, vision and values of SCCSS

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Between the ages of 15 to 30 years
  • Grade 12 education is a
  • Indigenous heritage, and fluency in French are assets.
  • Additional education or training re: Early Childhood Education, special needs, child and youth care, children's exposure to abuse or related training an asset.
  • Respect for diversity (including race, culture, class, gender, etc)
  • Experience working with children from diverse backgrounds an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence and vehicle not a requirement, but an asset.
  • Current Children's First Aid Certificate an asset. May be required training upon employment for a successful candidate without certification
  • Successful results of a criminal record check.
