Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.
Job Overview:
The Train Conductor, reporting to the Senior Train Conductor, plays a crucial role in supporting the safe and efficient operation of Heritage Park’s Train ride. This position involves conducting daily train operations, ensuring passenger safety, and collaborating closely with the Senior Train Conductor and other team members.
Responsibilities:
Passenger Conduction and Engagement
- Welcome guests to Heritage Park, providing information about daily activities and attractions
- Inform guests of daily events and promote events occurring in the park, contributing to increased engagement with Park activities
- Assist passengers in boarding and disembarking the train, ensuring passengers adhere to general rules of safety while on route enabling an enjoyable experience
- Signal to the engineer when the train is ready to leave the stations, ensuring passenger and pedestrian safety
- Ensure that train schedules are adhered to and announce approaching station stops to passengers
- Manage passenger behaviour as required, including excessive noise, hanging out windows, etc., ensuring passenger safety as well as a pleasant and smooth trip
- Engage passengers in conversations about the rich history of trains in Western Canada and other relevant historical information during their trip
- Create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors with a customer-focused approach, providing courteous and friendly customer service and information to enhance the overall visitor experience.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Contribute to inspiring and immersive experiences at the Park through your roles and responsibilities by engaging in Heritage Park initiatives that align with the overall mission and vision of the Park
- Demonstrate commitment to workplace health and safety by complying with Heritage Park's Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS), following safe work practices, reporting work-related incidents, injuries and hazards, participating in employer training, and adhering policies including the Code of Conduct and the Workplace Violence and Harassment Policy
- Actively support a positive work environment by creating an atmosphere of inclusion, engagement and fulfillment in line with Heritage Park values
- Demonstrate responsible stewardship of our people, collections and financial assets by ensuring that they are handled with integrity, sustainability, and a focus on long-term benefits for the organization and its stakeholders
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of secondary school education is required
- A minimum of 1 year experience in a related role is preferred
- Previous experience at Heritage Park would be an asset
- Prior experience working in a COR (Certificate of Recognition for Health and Safety) certified organization is an asset
- Excellent demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written)
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting
- Commitment to continuous learning and development
- All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through a Police Information Check as a condition of employment.
Special Clothing and Equipment:
- Appropriate costuming and safety equipment will be provided by Heritage Park;
- Footwear, as designated by the Heritage Park Costume Department, will be provided by the employee
Special Working Conditions:
- The position will be exposed to weather extremes and will work both indoors and outdoors
- This position requires a considerable amount of walking, standing for long periods of time, walking through the Park for extended periods and other strenuous duties
Hours of Work:
- The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week
- The schedule varies with shifts available from Monday to Sunday and are generally 8 hours shifts from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm
- Holiday and evening work may be required
