Job Summary

The Smart Farming Technical Engineer plays a key role in ensuring customers gain maximum value and confidence in using Datamars Smart Farming solutions, including Active Tags, Sorting Gates, and Walk Over Weigh systems. This position supports the entire customer journey—from on-farm installation, commissioning, and configuration through to ongoing technical support, troubleshooting, and training. The role combines hands-on technical expertise with strong communication and customer service skills to help clients successfully integrate Datamars technology into their operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage onboarding requirements of new customers from initial contact to system commissioning.

• Conduct pre- and post-site surveys (noise tests, range tests, flow layouts) and system commissioning (network setup, calibration, diagnostics).

• Perform installations of Active Tag, Walk Over Weigh, and Sort Gate systems—including mounting, cabling, and assembly.

• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues on-site, remotely, or through CRM/ticketing platforms.

• Monitor new and existing installations to ensure ongoing system performance and customer satisfaction.

• Maintain accurate documentation in CRM, including site data, configurations, and service history.

• Collaborate with internal teams to share customer feedback, identify product improvements, and refine best practices.

• Provide on-site and remote training to customers on use, maintenance, and optimization of Smart Farming systems.

• Work alongside existing customers to ensure they continue to receive value from Datamars solutions.

• Support the development of customer advocacy through training, responsiveness, and proactive engagement.

• Maintain awareness of local and global dairy industry trends and technologies.

• Other duties may be assigned.

Skills & Abilities

• Strong technical aptitude in electronics, networking, and hardware diagnostics.

• Effective problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with a customer-first approach.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.

• Hands-on and practical; comfortable using tools and working in agricultural environments.

• Ability to explain technical systems in a clear and approachable way to a range of audiences.

• Collaborative mindset with the ability to work cross-functionally and independently.

• Adaptability and resilience in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

• Proficient in CRM systems, ticketing tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.

• Strong documentation and reporting skills.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering, Dairy Science, or a related technical field preferred; equivalent experience considered.

• Minimum 2 years of experience in customer support, technical service, or commercial fieldwork in the agricultural industry.

• Experience with electronics, low-voltage hardware, sensors, and networking (Wi-Fi, IP, DHCP/static addressing).

• Experience configuring routers, cloud connectivity, and system commissioning.

• Demonstrated success working independently in the field environment and directly with customers.

• Proficiency in CRM software (Salesforce or similar) and support ticketing tools.

Working Environment

This position is executed remotely with frequent travel.   Position will work 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday; however, flexibility to work alternate days, including nights and weekends, according to business needs is required.

 

Physical Requirements

The position is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; bend; push/pull; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Travel

Frequent travel required, up to 50% of work time to customer sites to support installations and training activities.
