Hours: On-call shifts may be scheduled in the mornings, afternoons, or evenings. Hours are not fixed, and flexibility is required.

 The Opportunity: 

The Teaching Assistant (TA) will work closely support staff and clients. The primary responsibilities include working under the direction of the classroom teacher or Care Manager to enhance the learning experience and improve client engagement. The TA may assist the teacher in the classroom or work outside the classroom with a small group of clients or a single client on tasks and activities to strengthen their skills. The TA will also assist the Care Manager by photocopying, laminating, or otherwise supporting the preparation of materials and resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Displays knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of the program.
  • Establishes and maintains rapport with clients; interacts with them, asks questions, and shows genuine interest. Creates a fun and safe environment while engaging clients as individuals.
  • Assists teaching staff by working with clients either individually or in small groups. Checks in regularly and offers help as needed.
  • Prepares and duplicates teaching aids and materials as required by the Care Manager or Program Manager.
  • Maintains records and organizes resources, materials, and equipment at all sites.
  • Develops program resources under the direction of the teacher, Care Manager, or Program Manager.
  • Facilitates group discussions or activity circles as directed.
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of program or site events.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum one (1) year recent and relevant experience;
  • Experience in working with clients in a related field;
  • Adult teaching assistant experience required;
  • Strong interpersonal and English communication skills required;
  • Experience working with Spanish-speaking clients would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of multicultural and settlement issues, especially as they pertain to immigrants and refugees.
