POSITION SUMMARY:

The Swim Instructor position supports the work of the YMCA of Collier County, Inc., a leading not-for-profit organization committed to strengthening the communities in Collier County through its core focus areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The swim instructor must demonstrate competency to teach and lead specific skills and activities in the water. In addition, the Swim Instructor effectively builds community and modifies as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs. Swim instructors must create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Instruct and evaluate students participating in swimming lessons.

Responsible for the safety of participants in his/her own class.

Begin and end class on time, remain after class to answer participant and/or parent questions.

Maintain cleanliness and organize swim lesson equipment.

Submit completed skill sheets, certificates, and attendance information on time.

Maintains effective relationships with members, participants, and other staff.

Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times.

Every incidental duty connected with the Swim Instructor job cannot be specified in the position description and the colleague, at the discretion of the CEO, may be required to perform duties that are not included in this job description.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum age 16 years old.

Ability to pass the deep-water swim test.

Ability to work independently and possess energy and enthusiasm.

Ability to positively interact with the general public and to communicate well with children of all ages.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or willing to obtain WSI certification.

Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate skills in swim lessons.

Understand use of swim lesson equipment (kick boards/bars, diving sticks, etc.)

Previous swimming/instructing experience preferred.

Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Must be able to meet the Association’s background screening requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Ability to lift the weight of a small child (approx. 30lbs).

Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.

Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.

Onsite attendance is required of this position.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

Completion of YMCA Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Appropriate Touch classes

Completion of the YMCA’s Blood Borne Pathogens training

Completion of the Social Media & Digital Communications class

Completion of the YMCA’s Safe Lifting training

Additional training classes as required for this position to meet YMCA quality standards.
