The Organization

Since 1981, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto has served as a place to call home for families with seriously ill children undergoing treatment. RMHC Toronto encompasses a House for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven Family Rooms in hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area and in Sudbury. The families we serve come from throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the world.

Within RMHC Toronto is an onsite private school, which serves Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 siblings and patients staying at the House. RMHC Toronto School compassionately provides a unique, student-centered learning environment to facilitate academic, social and emotional success.

We are looking for a Supply Teacher to join our team in Toronto.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Principal, the Supply Teacher is responsible for working collaboratively with the School team to manage a multi-grade class of students in Grades JK-12 with varying medical, behavioral, learning, and emotional needs. The Supply Teacher ensures that all students are taught in a safe learning environment; creates a positive learning atmosphere; plans and delivers meaningful lessons; and ensures that the holistic development of students is priority. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate teaching plans for Grades JK-8 based on the Ontario Curriculum.  Tutor students in Grade 9-12, by creating content related to their course objectives or facilitating course material sent by hometown schools.
  • Contribute to the writing of individual education plans (IEPs), student progress reports and official Ontario report cards.
  • Work collaboratively with the School team to provide mentorship and timely feedback to student placements and volunteers, promoting engagement.
  • Support with the planning and organization of field trips, and School-wide events.
  • Prepare, maintain, and replenish bulletin board displays, the classroom library and classroom resources to encourage a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Respond to interdepartmental requests, providing School information when necessary, assisting in the stewardship of major donor requests and sharing appropriate social media stories as needed.
  • Establish clear expectations and appropriate classroom management strategies to create a caring and effective teaching and learning environment.
  • Communicate regularly, effectively, and respectfully with parents / caregivers in all written and oral interactions.
  • Performs other duties, as required.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

 Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in education. Certification in either Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate division and in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers. Special Education Specialist certification is an asset.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working with children of varying ages in educational settings (e.g. school, childcare center, camp). Experience working in a not-for-profit or special needs setting is an asset.

 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Completion of satisfactory reference check and a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Curriculum.
  • Working knowledge of education acts and reforms in education, laws and policies.
  • Proven knowledge of Special Education and the IEP development / implementation process.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present and clarify concerns and concepts to various audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to comfortably interact with all levels of the organization, parents, students, volunteers.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the abilities to manage multiple deliverables in a time-sensitive environment and adapt to frequently changing priorities.
  • Proven creativity to facilitate the learning for many students in a variety of grades with different interests and levels of understanding.
  • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, SMART Notebook and online learning platforms (e.g., D2L).
  • Excellent classroom management and progressive discipline skills.
  • Proven success working with students with medical or mental health needs an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team, as well as independently.
