JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective 

This is a seasonal position starting in June, ending in August, working approximately 30 hours per week. 

Under the supervision of the OCC Director and/or Program Coordinator; counselor is assigned to coordinate and supervise young participants (ages 6-13) at Carbuncle beach facility. The counselor will lead participants in recreational and educational activities such as athletics, game play, crafting, etc. assisting participants as needed while engaging and interacting with their group and ensuring that program equipment is used correctly.

Responsibilities

The Counselor is responsible for the following (at minimum – plus other duties as assigned):

Plan and implement outdoor activities or sports for groups of participants.

Create weekly or daily schedules considering children’s age groups and interests.

Lead recreational and educational activities (such as swimming, or crafting).

Escort and oversee children in all areas of the Carbuncle Park grounds and facility.

Educate participants through games and explorations.

Set up activity supplies and pack away all supplies when activity has ended and maintain equipment.

Maintain a clean environment wherever your group is stationed. Ensure the backpack area is always tidy. Sweep lunchroom floor and wash tables.

Resolve occasional disagreements between children and address behavioral issues in a positive and constructive manner.

Make sure all safety rules are followed.

Ensure the site is clean and that participants don’t litter recreational areas or nature.

Perform first aid or take care of injuries as needed.

Keep accurate incident logs.

Other beach/facility related duties as assigned.

Check-in children every morning and report any absences to Program Coordinator

Be aware of where your participants are always. Place yourself strategically in locations to allow you to observe all your group at the same time. 

Ensure authorized pick-up of children, checking IDs against list of authorized names.

Function as a positive role model in terms of language, body language, sportsmanship, engagement with participants and parents, cheerful outlook, respectful behavior.

Supervisory Responsibility
None.

Work Environment
Counselors are required to work at a freshwater lakefront where they are exposed to inclement weather conditions, often with insufficient protection from the sun. Hazards may be presented by naturally occurring and continually changing conditions such as water temperature, debris, and uneven sand. 

Physical Demands

Ability to push, pull, or lift 20 pounds (frequently), 50 pounds (occasionally).

Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time in varying outside air temperatures and climate conditions.

Must have sufficient hearing to perform the duties of the job.

While performing duties of this job, employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; jump, stoop, kneel, or crouch. 

Ability to walk, run, jump, or stand on uneven terrain.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Full Time (30-35 hours/week) 12-16 weeks desired.

Required Education and Experience

16 years of age or older. 

Proven experience as Counselor or similar role working with children.

Familiarity with camping and various outdoor activities

Patient, ready and willing to listen and give undivided attention to the children.

Organizational and communication skills

A love for children

Energetic and positive personality

Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (strength and stamina to follow strenuous activities like hiking, running, crouching, or carrying children)

First aid- and CPR-certified preferred

High school diploma

You will need to pass a drug or background test according to local laws.

Punctual and dependable
