POSITION SUMMARY: DAY CAMP

The Day Camp Counselor and Sports Camp Counselor is responsible to carry out high quality outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on the Mankato Family YMCA core values of caring, honesty, responsibility, respect, and faith. Responsible for the general safety, development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in the group. Camp runs Monday-Friday daytime hours and staff are scheduled May through August. Work schedules are flexible and relatively consistent.  Pay starts at $12.25/hour.

POSITION SUMMARY: Resident Camp Patterson

The Summer Resident Camp Counselor is responsible for providing high quality outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in their group. Staff are scheduled for 1 week (6 days) at a time of Resident Camp. Currently hiring for the following weeks Sunday - Friday:  June 9-14, June 16-21, June 23-28, and August 4-9.  Pay starts at $500/week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  DAY CAMP

1.            Execute the weekly schedule/curriculum designed by the Summer Camp Leadership team, including implementing program activities in-group and camp-wide that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA core values.

2.            Enforce appropriate safety measures and positive behavior intervention methods by observing, identifying, and responding to participant’s behavior.

3.            Participate in all training activities which are provided to support program policies and procedures, personal growth, and skill development.

4.            Maintain positive relations with staff and campers. Model relationship-building skills in all interactions.

5.            Set a positive example in exercise, attitude, personal habits, and food selection, including promoting good manners at mealtime and encourage common courtesies.

6.            Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter up to cleanliness standards.

7.            Assist in YMCA promotion of the program including photos, videos and other forms of communication.

8.            Make ongoing systematic observations and evaluations of each child. Communicate with camp leadership about camper’s experiences and report concerns to Camp Administration.

9.            Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports and daily attendance.

10.          Know, enforce, and follow all safety procedures and emergency action plans associated with the camp and all program areas.  This includes but is not limited to being responsible for campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.

11.          Follow all program policy and procedures including Child Abuse Prevention Policies.

12.          Perform all other duties as assigned by the Camp Director

1.            Supervises a group of eight to twelve campers.

2.            Follows the weekly schedule at camp, including implemented program activities in-group and camp-wide that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA core values.

3.            Enforce appropriate safety measures and positive behavior intervention methods by observing, identifying, and responding to participant’s behavior.

4.            Participate in all training activities which are provided to support program policies and procedures, personal growth, and skill development.

5.            Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.

6.            Be a friend and leader to each individual in your group to promote improved camper self-image and good group relationship.

7.            Set a positive example in exercise, attitude, personal habits, and food selection, including promoting good manners at mealtime and encourage common courtesies.

8.            Help the campers with daily self-maintenance tasks: i.e., brushing teeth, eating at meals together, helping your campers prepare for swimming, and being sure all personal belongings are organized.

9.            Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each session.  Activities may include crafts, nature, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, archery, canoeing, etc. 

10.          Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.

11.          Know, enforce, and follow all safety procedures and emergency action plans associated with the camp and all program areas.  This includes but is not limited to being responsible for campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.

12.          Follow all program policy and procedures including Child Abuse Prevention Policies.

13.          Perform all other duties as assigned by the Camp Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Never convicted of any child abuse including sexual abuse

2.    Previous experience working with diverse children preferably in a camp setting.

3.    CPR, First Aid, AED certifications within 60 days of hire.

4.    Emotional maturity, good moral character, and integrity.

5.    Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field.

6.    Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities.

7.    Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.

8.    Strong communication (both written and verbal) skills with the ability to be flexible and quickly adapt.

9.    Commitment and passion to working with children

10.  Self-motivated and ability to multi-task

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs).  Perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time.  The ability to calmly and effectively react in an emergency situation.
