Position Summary:

Provide custodial and minor maintenance for agency, classrooms, offices, common areas, utilities, equipment, fixtures, and materials for the facility and grounds. Follow health and safety procedures and perform safety inspections and checklists to ensure facility and grounds are hazard free.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Duties:

  1. Daily cleaning of classrooms, office, bathrooms, and common areas, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting and emptying trash.  Wash out buckets and mops at the end of each day.
  2. Inventory control of all cleaning supplies, including ordering and receiving supplies.
  3. Quarterly deep cleaning and maintenance of building interior and exterior (i.e. Floor waxing, carpet cleaning, pressure wash building).
  4. Ensure that safety and health procedures are followed as directed by the Center Director and/or Facilities Coordinator and/or established policy.
  5. Perform routine inspections and regular upkeep of interior and exterior areas to ensure areas are free of safety hazards, trash, weeds and other foreign materials.
  6. Perform regular upkeep of outside areas, including playgrounds and parking lots, to include trash and litter removal required to keep areas clean, neat and safe.  Rake playground fall zones daily.  Till entire playground monthly.
  7. Assist with moving office and classroom furniture, fixtures and equipment to support increasing staffing changes, relocations, remodels, program expansion and custodial requirements.
  8. Perform miscellaneous minor maintenance; (i.e. change filters, paint, unclog toilets, replace light bulbs, etc.) as needed.
  9. Assist with setting up for training and events as needed.
  10. Complete safety checks as stated in the policies and procedures.
  11. Attend meetings and training as required or recommended by the supervisor. Perform other duties as assigned.
  12. Respond to on-call custodial/minor maintenance emergencies outside of regularly assigned hours.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to communicate (verbal and written) effectively and appropriately with others.
  • Ability to read and follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to use mechanical equipment, such as carpet cleaner, floor scrubber, vacuum, tools etc.
  • Ability to use various chemicals and cleaning agents.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Daily lifting up to 50 lbs, to load and transport bulk supplies, furniture, fixtures etc.
  • Occasional lifting of over 70 lbs., with assistance.
  • Daily standing for periods of several hours while executing various tasks.
  • Regular crouching, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling etc. to facilitate various repairs and maintenance activities. Includes occasional ladder climbing and crawling under equipment buildings etc.
  • Regular reaching, including over-head to stock and retrieve supplies, equipment, painting, repairs etc.

Professional Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for adhering to the professional development plan, which may include annual training and/or workshops to remain informed of job-related requirements/skills development.
  2. Follow all agency, program, and state/federal guidelines
  3. Responsible for reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (*whether witnessed or made aware of) to immediate supervisor and/or Head Start/EHS Director within one hour of activity.
  4. Must be able to periodically attend out of town conferences and training sessions as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:  High School diploma (or equivalent) and one-year custodial experience, valid NC driver’s license, minor repair experience. 

Preferred: High School diploma (or equivalent) and two years of custodial experience, and above minimum qualifications
