Site Supervisor (Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre)
Who We Are
Emterra operates three of the larger Metro Vancouver Recycling and Waste Centres that are located throughout the Lower Mainland. These facilities receive large volumes of recyclables and waste that are consolidated and shipped to various destinations in western North America In addition, each facility contains comprehensive recycling depots that divert materials away from disposal and into the green economy.
Emterra has an opening for a Supervisor at its Central Surrey facility located on 154th Street. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who has a passion for environmental issues, and also likes to interact with the public (our customers). The successful individual will provide leadership support to operations. This includes ensuring that the receiving and shipping of recyclable materials and waste is performed in a safe and efficient manner. This involves managing and organizing the facilities key resources: our people and equipment. This position is key to the success of the organization. It is expected that the successful individual follows management’s guidance and direction and sets daily activities, priorities and objectives for the site as well as maintains effective working relations with staff, other supervisors, and members of the general public in order to meet objectives and resolve issues on a timely basis.
The facilities are open 363 days per year. Applicants must be willing and able to work shifts which are four on and four off. The number of employees per crew, in which the Supervisor is responsible, can vary from 10 to 14, depending on the site and degree of activity.
What will you do?
- Supervise, co-ordinate and schedule the activities of staff, which includes weigh masters, equipment operators, recycling attendants and general labourers.
- Under the direction of the Site Manager, ensure that production meets productivity goals in a safe manner;
- Provide coaching to employees and progressive corrective discipline when necessary.
- Provide customers with a great service experience at the facility;
- Enforce waste disposal bans and regulations set by the government;
- Coordinate with the maintenance team to ensure preventative maintenance is performed on schedule and downtime is minimized;
- Work actively with scale and shipping personnel to coordinate material flowing in and out of the facility;
- Ensure good housekeeping and a safe, well organized facility;
- Prepare production and other reports;
- Assist in training personnel;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What will you bring?
- 2-3 years of experience in a supervisory role in a logistics, manufacturing or processing environment is preferred;
- Fluency in English and ability to communicate well with members of the public;
- Professionalism combined
with leadership qualities;
- Must be proactive and willing to learn; and
- Demonstrated conflict resolution skills.
- An interest in cultivating a positive work environment;
- A willingness and enthusiasm in working within the green economy;
- Ability and willingness to work shift work, weekends and holidays (four and four off rotation);
- Experience in the waste management and recycling industry is preferred, but is not necessary;
