Shipyard Power Tooler

Job Summary:

Avail Staffing is currently looking for Power Toolers that will be responsible for using a wide range of pneumatic, electric, and hydraulic power tools to support structural, mechanical, and outfitting work on marine vessels. This position requires hands-on experience with grinders, needle guns, chippers, saws, and other industrial-grade tools used in ship repair, maintenance, and construction. Power Toolers will work under the direction of skilled tradespeople and foremen to ensure tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and to specifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operate hand-held and power-assisted tools including grinders, chipping hammers, needle scalers, impact wrenches, drills, and saws.
• Perform surface preparation tasks such as grinding welds, removing paint, rust, and marine growth.
• Assist welders, fitters, and mechanics with fabrication and demolition tasks.
• Use tools to cut, bevel, or smooth metal and structural components.
• Follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE including hearing protection, gloves, eye protection, and respirators as needed.
• Maintain power tools in good working condition; report malfunctions or needed repairs to supervisor.
• Assist with lifting, positioning, and securing heavy equipment and structural parts.
• Work in confined spaces, at heights, and aboard active naval vessels or dry docks as needed.
• Support hot work operations and may be assigned additional laborer or fire watch duties as needed.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• 1+ year of shipyard or industrial experience using power tools.
• Ability to safely use grinders, scalers, saws, and air-powered tools.
• Familiarity with shipyard safety standards (OSHA, NAVSEA, etc.) preferred.
• Physically capable of standing for long periods, climbing ladders, working in tight spaces, and lifting 50+ lbs.
• Must pass background check for DBIDS access and security clearance eligibility (if required).
• Willing to work overtime, weekends, and variable shifts based on production needs.

Preferred Certifications:

• OSHA 10 Maritime Safety Certification
• Respirator Fit-Test Certification
