Summary of Duties:

The Shelter Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the shelter, ensuring the safety, well-being, and comfort of shelter residents. This role supervises and maintains shelter facilities, and provides leadership in creating a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for individuals and families experiencing housing insecurity. The Shelter Supervisor also liaises with community resources and services to assist residents in meeting their needs.

Key Deliverables and Expectations:

  • Supervise and manage the shelter facility, ensuring that daily operations run smoothly and that all responsibilities are fulfilled effectively.
  • Monitor and maintain shelter facilities, ensuring they are clean, safe, and welcoming for residents.
  • Assist with intake procedures for new residents, ensuring they understand shelter rules and receive necessary support.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in dealing with resident issues, emergencies, or conflicts, following safety protocols.
  • Coordinate meal distribution, personal hygiene supplies, and other essential services for residents.
  • Develop and implement shelter programs and activities that promote resident well-being and support their transition to stable housing.
  • Maintain accurate records of resident information, services provided, and incidents occurring within the shelter.
  • Respond to emergencies and manage crises calmly and professionally, ensuring that safety procedures are followed.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for residents, offering support and resolving any issues that arise.
  • Foster a positive and respectful environment by promoting collaboration and respect among residents and staff.
  • Liaise with community agencies, healthcare providers, and other service organizations to connect residents with necessary resources.
  • Ensure compliance with all shelter policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

Experience and Attributes:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education or certifications in social services, social work, or related fields preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in shelter operations, social services, or community support roles, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations and emergencies with calmness and professionalism.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to working with individuals and families in crisis.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols, hygiene procedures, and shelter operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including First Nation Communities, is an asset.
  • Must be able to provide a clear Criminal Record Check, vulnerable sector.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 license and a reliable vehicle for travelling and transporting when required.
