Settlement Worker In Schools - Settlement Services
Responsibilities: Settlement Workers in Schools assist refugee and newcomer students along with their families in their transition to a new community. This is a position that aims to assist families to better understand the education system and provide information and referrals to education & community resources.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work with diverse groups of people in a collaborative, culturally aware manner;
- Effective multitasking, priority setting and organization skills;
- Ability to work independently, as a team and on a flexible work schedule;
- Knowledge of immigrant/refugee settlement and integration process;
- Ability to adapt to new and challenging situations;
- Functional computer skills including keyboard skills, word processing and database applications;
- Knowledge and/or willingness to learn about local school divisions;
- Must have a Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver's Licence & access to a reliable vehicle;
- Must be able to pass a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check;
Education & Experience:
- Undergraduate degree in social services, humanities, or similar is preferred;
- Direct experience working with the SWIS program or in cross cultural settings would be considered an asset;
- Experience working with diverse teams and Service Provider Organizations;
- Experience working with vulnerable populations, particularly immigrants and refugees;
- Language abilities in Somali, Arabic, Swahili would be considered an asset;

Objectives:
- Conduct needs assessments with students and their families;
- Provide newcomer students and families with information and referrals to education and community resources;
- Work with a team to plan and facilitate orientations, workshops, training sessions and events for newcomers;
- Keep up to date client progress notes, complete monthly reporting obligations, maintain caseload and client files;
- Arrange and attend regular school and home visits;
- Work collaboratively with the settlement workers at YWCA Prince Albert, teachers, school counsellors, principals, and administration;
- Crisis counselling and referrals for families, as needed;
- Liaise with schools to gain understanding of their respective programs, share best practices and provide support where there may be challenges;
- Increase school, and public, awareness of settlement and newcomer issues through presentations, meetings and community involvement;
- Produce and distribute SWIS promotional materials and update as required;
- All other tasks as requested by Manager;
