Who We Are:

Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.

Job Overview:

As the Senior Manager of People and Culture at Heritage Park, this role will serve as a key member of the people leadership team, responsible for executing strategic initiatives that foster a positive and inclusive company culture, enhance employee and volunteer engagement, and ensure the overall well-being of the workforce. This role requires an experienced HR professional with strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of HR and volunteer best practices. 

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Work with the leadership to develop and execute comprehensive HR strategies and key performance indicators that drive organizational change and align with the company’s vision, mission, and values
  • Evaluate emerging HR and volunteer engagement trends and impacts to business operations and adjust program management accordingly
  • Foster a culture of inclusivity, diversity and engagement
Human Resources Management

  • Lead the HR team in the efficient and cost-effective delivery of HR services, including total compensation and employee relations. Serve as a backfill for the Talent and HSE managers during absences
  • Leverage data, analytics and HR systems to optimize HR processes and inform decision-making
  • Implement HR policies and procedures that support the organization's strategic objectives
  • Conduct periodic compliance audits to ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations
  • Manage Heritage Parks labour relations, interpreting and applying the collective agreement
  • Create a culture of trusted partnerships with all employees and stakeholders, providing resources and advisory services
  • Manage internal communications strategies to promote transparency, engagement and alignment with organizational goals. Foster a culture of effective communication and feedback
  • Oversees the management of workplace accommodations and return to work planning for all staff including WCB and non-occupational claims in accordance with the collective agreements and best practice
  • Develop and implement comprehensive wellness programs to promote physical, mental and emotional well-being of employees
  • Recommends engagement strategies and initiatives to the senior leadership team based on regular requirements, industry standards and organizational needs
Volunteer Services Management

  • Advocate for the significance of volunteers within the organization, emphasizing their value and impact 
  • Collaborate with various departments to cultivate strategic corporate partnerships, aligning volunteering opportunities with organizational needs 
  • Work with the Director of P&C to design the Volunteer Program's budget and track and monitor expenditures. 
  • Manage the development and enhancing volunteer programs and initiatives
  • Use data and analytics to make informed decisions and improve volunteer program initiatives 
  • Generate regular volunteer reports and evaluate the effectiveness of the volunteer program, implementing improvements as needed 
  • Evaluate and review volunteer program policies regularly, making enhancements as necessary and compiling usage reports 
  • Develop and promote formal and informal Volunteer Recognition Programs to enhance volunteer engagement. 
  • Prepare and update volunteer orientation materials and handbooks, ensuring volunteers have access to comprehensive resources 
  • Work with the Director of P&C to design a volunteer engagement plan and annual initiatives. 
  • Work with the P&C leader to design a volunteer engagement survey. Lead the annual survey, analyze feedback, and present it to the leadership. Create a post-survey action plan and track it to ensure it follows through
Leadership and Reporting

  • Leads by example by providing day-to-day support to the direct reports to enhance expertise and professional growth
  • Provide guidance and training on all areas human resources and volunteer engagement
  • Assesses areas for development for direct reports and provides open and respectful feedback in a timely fashion
  • Works with direct reports to create SMART goals and track and ensure regular communication for on-time goal delivery and completion
  • Provides recommendations to the Director, P&C for succession planning initiatives regarding the P&C department
  • Leads the charge to influence others to change the ways of Employee and Volunteer experience at the Park 
  • Generate and present reports and metrics to the Director of P&C
  • Use data and analytics to make informed decisions and enhance employee and volunteer engagement initiatives
  • Monitor key performance indicators for annual initiatives and provide monthly status reports
Organizational Excellence and Wellbeing

  • Contribute to inspiring and immersive experiences at the Park through your roles and responsibilities by engaging in Heritage Park initiatives that align with the overall mission and vision of the Park
  • Demonstrate commitment to workplace health and safety by complying with Heritage Park's Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS), following safe work practices, reporting work-related incidents, injuries and hazards, participating in employer training, and adhering policies including the Code of Conduct and the Workplace Violence and Harassment Policy
  • Actively support a positive work environment through creating an atmosphere of inclusion, engagement and fulfillment in line with Heritage Park values
  • Demonstrate responsible stewardship of our people, collections and financial assets by ensuring that they are handled with integrity, sustainability, and a focus on long-term benefits for the organization and its stakeholders

Required Qualifications:

  • University degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or a related field; a master’s degree would be an asset. Advanced training in Business Management or Labour Relations is considered an asset.
  • 7+ years of Human Resources experience at an organization-wide level with diverse responsibilities.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in people and project management with a focus on total compensation and employee and volunteer engagement initiatives.
  • Minimum two years’ experience overseeing volunteer resources area. Experience working in a non-profit, tourism, or related area.
  • Must be an active member of CPHR or a similar HR Association. CPHR or CHRL designation is preferred.
  • Experience coaching managers, supporting team members and managing a volunteer program is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence at all levels of the organization. 
  • Experience managing a department with team members with diverse responsibilities is required.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, individually and as part of a team.
  • Proven conflict resolution and negotiation skills. A certified workplace investigator is highly desired.
  • Strategic thinking skills – future-oriented mindset, trend analysis, challenge assumptions, innovate and create.

  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills.
