Who We Are:

Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.

Job Overview:

Reporting to the Director of Fund Development, the Senior Development Officer plays a critical role in advancing the fundraising efforts of Heritage Park. The Senior Development Officer functions as the primary Major Gift Officer, responsible for managing a portfolio of major donors capable of making gifts exceeding $10,000. They will cultivate and steward relationships with approximately 100 major donors annually, with an overarching fundraising target of $1,000,000 or more. This role involves strategic identification of prospective donors, personalized engagement through various channels, and proactive solicitation to secure significant financial support.  It contributes to broader fundraising strategies aimed at achieving organizational financial goals and fostering a culture of philanthropy within the Park.

Responsibilities:

Fundraising Strategy and Execution

  • Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising plans to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts from individual, corporate, and foundation donors
  • Prepare compelling proposals, presentations, and communications materials tailored to engage major donors effectively
  • Monitor progress towards fundraising goals, analyze outcomes, and adapt strategies as necessary to optimize results
  • Conduct research to evaluate potential donor capacity and suitability, identifying new opportunities for donor cultivation and solicitation
  • Lead strategic planning and execution of comprehensive capital campaigns, including prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities
  • Oversee the fundraising coordinator, providing guidance and support in developing and implementing fundraising strategies, including donor cultivation and stewardship
  • Guide the Fundraising Coordinator in developing and executing direct mail fundraising campaigns, cultivation and implementing the monthly donor program, and community fundraising initiatives
  • Stay abreast of philanthropic trends and best practices to enhance fundraising strategies and donor engagement efforts
Donor Relationship Management, Engagement and Recognition

  • Develops strategies to deepen relationships with donors, employing moves management techniques to ensure meaningful engagement and continued support
  • Attends networking events and social engagements to cultivate and maintain relationships with prospective and existing donors
  • Builds and maintains strong, personalized relationships with prospective/current donors through regular communication, meetings, and events
  • Leverages the Park and considers relationship-building efforts aimed at increasing donor involvement and investment
  • Develops and implements recognition activities and provides excellent stewardship to major donors, expressing gratitude and ensuring their continued engagement and support
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to provide donors with opportunities for engagement, such as exclusive events, site visits, and volunteer activities
  • Promote a culture of philanthropy internally by inspiring staff participation in fundraising activities and recognizing contributions to donor relations
People Leadership

  • Support the Director of Fund Development in providing strategic direction to the team by implementing initiatives supporting the strategic business plan and ensuring the team understands how the department contributes to the overall success of the organization
  • Ensure consistent alignment with organizational goals by setting fundraising objectives based on Heritage Park’s strategic business plan and values
  • Act as a bridge between senior/executive leadership and frontline staff, providing essential support, facilitating clear communication, and offering guidance to ensure a smooth and effective transition during organizational changes
  • Regularly assess and enhance staff performance through ongoing feedback, goal-setting, and professional development initiatives, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and individual growth within the team
  • Support the professional development of staff by assigning relevant training, collaboratively resolving problems, and actively coaching team members
  • Participate in the recruitment, orientation and training of new staff to ensure employees are provided with complete information and resources to perform their responsibilities

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (such as non-profit management, fundraising, communications, or business administration)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in fundraising with a proven track record for closing gifts at the $25K+ level
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience managing a team including delegation, change management, mentorship and performance management
  • Proven track record of successfully soliciting and securing major gifts from individual and institutional donors
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a donor-facing setting
  • Strong persuasive writing skills
  • Exceptional planning, organization, project management, prioritization, and time-management skills are required to manage multiple on-going projects simultaneously
  • Strategic, analytical, interpretive and evaluation skills are considered an asset
  • Strong administrative and technical skills, including experience in MS Office software, desktop publishing, website maintenance and donor management software - experience with Raiser’s Edge a definite asset
  • Passion for the mission and values of Heritage Park. 
  • Working knowledge of the Calgary and area giving community
  • A valid driver’s license required with access to a vehicle for travel within the Calgary region
  • All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through Police Information Check as a condition of employment.
