Under the general direction of the Director of Central Material Services, the Quality Assurance Specialist will ensure Central Material Services (CMS) employees are properly trained and operating within the guidelines set forth by various industry standards and regulations including, but not limited to, HSPA[, CDC[AD2] , OSHA[AD3] , FDA[AD4] , ADA[AD5] , ADEA [AD6] and AAMI[AD7] . Performs various other training duties related to instrument processing, infection control and cross contamination as necessary. Includes alternate satellite sites as needed to conduct and document training.
 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct orientation and training of new employees.


Monitor and track performance of newly hired employees to track progress.Identify areas of improvement and work with employee and direct supervisor to improve.


Assist manager with cross-training of current employees in infection prevention, decontamination, and safety procedures.


Identify areas of improvement and work with employee and direct supervisor to improve.


Conduct bi-annual employee competencies. Develop and maintain an educational plan. Conduct CMS training based on best demonstrated practices within sterilization.


Monitor and revise education programs as necessary to ensure staff receive updated information.


Develop and maintain a schedule for continuing education and training.


Document all training in electronic and physical database.


 Conduct annual audits of staff training records to ensure compliance with governing guidelines set forth by various industry standards such as HSPA, CDC, OSHA, ADA, ADEA and AAMI.


Review and revise policies and procedures in collaboration with the director to ensure best demonstrated practices are being applied 


In collaboration with the director, develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOP) manuals as the blueprint and foundation for UMB School of Dentistry and other satellite clinics.


Responsible for creation and implementation of employee performance improvement activities, such as cross contamination training, infection control, etc.


Provide regular updates to staff on current issues affecting the operation, particularly quality issues.


In the absence of supervisory staff will act as departmental supervisor in charge.


Updates job knowledge by studying trends and developments in quality management, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.


Collaborate and maintain quality relationships with committees, councils, vendors, and other professionals in teaching, consultation, research, and facilitation of best demonstrated practices related to instrument processing, infection prevention and quality assurance.


Promotes customer service, quality service, and the mission of the UMSOD. Model behavior that is appropriate for affiliation with the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.



Note: The intent of this list of primary duties is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this job.  Incumbents perform other related duties assigned.  Specific duties and responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: HS Diploma required. Associates degree is preferred; 2-4 years of Quality Assurance experience preferred.  Minimum 5 years of surgical technologist, instrument processing, or central sterile processing experience required. Related education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

 

OTHER:Certification through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CPSPD) as a Central Supply Processing Department Technician (CSPDT) or Certification through Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) within 24 months is required.

Required Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:Comprehensive knowledge of the theory. Knowledge of spreadsheets, databases and work processing using Microsoft Office applications. Highly demonstrated interpersonal skills and abilities necessary to handle sensitive and confidential situations with tact and diplomacy and to interact with diverse groups of people both within and outside the organization
Highly effective written and verbal communication skills necessary to support the operational efficiency of the organization. Effective organizational and time management skills and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.

 

 

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:Employees in this job class may be required to receive immunization shots to prevent illness due to exposure to blood borne pathogens. Overtime, weekend, on-call and shift work may be required.
