Program Assistant I Pediatric Clinic Position Control Number PA1-22-130-02
SUMMARY:
The Spanish Bilingual Interpreter Program Assistant provides
interpretation and translation as needed in the various clinics for our
Spanish-speaking patients. The Incumbent
will provide clerical support for dental clinic operations as needed for front
desk and call center that includes and not limited to scheduling and confirming
appointments and working directly with patients, residents, pre-doctoral
students and staff.
1. Orally interpret and translate conversations in Spanish to provide accurate communication between our Spanish-speaking patients and non-Spanish speaking providers.
2. Responsible for floating between clinics to provide support for those who need an interpreter.
3. Responsible for telephone coverage of the front desk, operating paging system, taking and distributing messages, and answering all callers’ questions.
4. Provides excellent customer service to patients arriving for appointments. Pages faculty, students and staff to inform them of patient arrival.
5. Schedules appointments to accommodate patients; resolves scheduling conflicts and fits in emergency appointments. Confirms appointments with patients for the next business day.
6. Verifies contact information and that insurance or medical assistance are still in force. Gets insurance pre-authorization of coverage. Informs patient of today's charges and any previous balance due before any service is rendered.
7. Requests payment for any procedures in accordance with the University of Maryland Dental School's policies and procedures guidelines. Responds to inquires about patient's account. Requests payment when account is delinquent; may assist Patient Account Specialist to correct errors when necessary.
8. Handles day-to-day payment transactions makes change; receives checks; processes credit card transactions; issues receipts; validates parking.
9. Processes and reconciles daily receipt with AxiUM daily ledger and deposit receipts into the night deposit box.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:High school diploma or general education degree (GED); 1 - 3 years’ related experience. Related education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Required Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:Must fluently speak and understand Spanish and English. Knowledge of standard office procedures; must be able to operate computer and other office machines, such as fax, calculator, answering telephones, as well greeting visitors and so on. Skill in filing documents according to alphabetic and numeric sequences; in operating manual and automated office equipment; Ability to apply close attention to detail in performing routine clerical tasks. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective work relationships.
The candidate will be required to be a certified interpreter or be willing to get certification after they are hired. UM FDSP covers the cost of the certification and the candidate will have one year from their start date to successfully acquire the certification. Overtime and shift work may be required.
