Internship Overview:

Under the direction of a Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern will gain hands on experience at Sweetgrass Pharmacy in both the retail and compounding areas of the business.  The Intern will learn about the different aspects of the pharmacy industry, including customer service, inventory management and cashiering. They will also learn about the different aspects of the job, including filling prescriptions, preparing medications and maintaining the pharmacy. The intern is a student who is earning their Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) at a college or university registered in the state of South Carolina. This internship is expected to start in the Fall of 2025.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Providing customer service by answering phone calls, responding to emails and resolving customer issues
  • Maintaining inventory of medications and supplies in the pharmacy
  • Performing operational tasks such as stocking shelves, organizing inventory, and labeling medications
  • Preparing medications for patients by counting tablets, measuring ingredients, mixing solutions, or other tasks as directed by a pharmacist
  • Learning about new drugs that are being developed or old drugs that have been discontinued or changed
  • Train and learn on how to make compounding batches in non-sterile lab.
  • Performing clerical duties such as filing patient records and processing insurance claims
  • Observing interactions between patients and pharmacists to ensure that medication instructions are followed correctly
  • Cleaning and sterilizing equipment used in dispensing drugs such as inhalers or syringes
  • Communicating with physicians to clarify prescription orders or to obtain approval for new medications
  • Other Duties As Assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Must be enrolled in a Pharm.D. program
  • Must have a Pharmacy Intern License from the SC Board of Pharmacy
  • Customer Service Experience a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Pleasant demeanor and ability to handle a variety of customer service issues
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs
  • Must be collaborative and able to perform as part of a team
  • Ability to take direction.
  • Knowledge of applicable pharmacy software(s) a plus.
  • Ability to work a cash register.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform simple math.
  • Limited exposure to potentially hazardous substances
