St. James Parish Government is hiring a Library Programs Coordinator under the Operations Department.

JOB FUNCTION:  This person is responsible for the organization and implementation of library services and special programs and is under the supervision of the Library Supervisor. The person in this position is often the first person the public contacts; therefore, this person must be friendly, cordial and exude a desire to assist the public with their library needs. This position requires someone capable of working independently while providing detailed and accurate work. An awareness of electronic resources, computer searching, and the ability and desire to become familiar with library resources is necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This job may include any combination of the following illustrative examples of duties and responsibilities including but not limited to:

 Â·         Plans, coordinates, and participates in library programs and activities for all ages.

 Â·         Create displays/flyers that are appealing to the public and that promote the use of the library and library programs.

 Â·         Helps purchase supplies for programs, including traveling to pickup items.

 Â·         Records events with digital photographs.

 Â·         Receives patron feedback on programs through conversation.

 Â·         Prepares a detailed report to the Library Supervisor of each program, the attendance, and other necessary information.

 Â·         Provides directional and informational assistance to the public.

 Â·         Provides instruction in the use of the library and in the services and programs that it provides.

 Â·         Plans and organizes arts and crafts programs, book talks, community awareness programs, and other topics of interest.

 Â·         Assists the Library Supervisor in assessing efficiency of circulation and other work routines.

 Â·         Other duties and projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/ OR EXPERIENCE: Must be a high school and college graduate. Must possess the ability to work independently and in a variety of situations. A working knowledge of libraries is preferred with the ability to learn library terminology, techniques, and procedures mandatory.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: This person must be able to add subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers. The person who fills this position must be able to make change, calculate, and compile statistical reports.

REASONING ABILITY: The ability to meet and serve the public is mandatory. The ability to interpret and carry out library rules and regulations is necessary. This employee must have excellent verbal and written communications skills.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver’s License, (class “Eâ€) and have an acceptable driving record. 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 Â·         Be able to speak clearly and free of any speech and hearing impediments that would interfere with dealing with the public both in person and over the telephone.

 Â·         The ability to perform basic office procedures such as filing, creating and reconciling reports.

 Â·         Ability to use basic office equipment such as typewriters, adding machines, and computers.  Should be able to type 30 correct words per minute, use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and the Internet.

 Â·         Must be able to provide transportation to and from work, run errands when necessary and be comfortable traveling to library sponsored workshops that may require over night stays. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representatives of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 This job involves equal parts of standing and sitting.  While performing this job the employee must be able to stand on a stool to retrieve materials from shelves approximately seven feet from the ground.  They must be able to bend to retrieve library materials from the bottom shelf on the ground level.  Some library materials weigh up to 15 or 20 pounds per item.  Must be able to push or pull a loaded book cart that weighs approximately 60 pounds.  Sometimes moving equipment such as computers and furniture such as table as and chairs will be expected.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment for this position is primarily inside the Lutcher Library Headquarters; however, regular visits to the Vacherie Library will be necessary.  It involves providing services to large groups at a time and implementing the library’s policies for behavior.  On occasion, the employee will have to make judgment calls concerning patron situations and determine those that the staff can control and those that need to be turned over to the proper authority.
