Overnight Boarding Staff, Appleby Overnight

Full-time hours between July 28 - August 23, 2024 

Appleby Overnight is designed for Campers ages 10 to 14 and Enrichment students ages 12 to 14, to experience an exciting overnight stay in boarding at Appleby College for the duration of their program!  We are looking for caring, qualified, and experienced individuals to help our campers experience what overnight camp is all about.  Appleby Overnight Boarding Staff are responsible for all after-hours programming, accompany students to all meals, check them into their programs each morning and, of course, do a lights-out check at the end of each fun-filled day! We require all summer program staff to have current CPR-C and First Aid certification and a valid Vulnerable Sector Check.

Residing on campus as part of the Appleby Overnight Program Team, the Overnight Boarding Staff are responsible for the supervision, programming, well-being and safety of all participants living in boarding.  Reporting to the Overnight Program Director, Summer Camps, this position will support the Summer Camps’ mission to create an exceptional on-campus living experience.

 Specific Accountabilities:

  • Supervise and lead students during daily evening programming 
  • Supervise the boarding house to ensure the safety of each camper
  • Participate actively in all aspects of the camper's experience outside of their day camp program, including all after-hours programming, accompany students to breakfast and dinner, check them into their programs each morning, conducting lights-out check
  • Nurture a positive overnight environment by leading, motivating and encouraging campers and fellow staff members
  • Provide support to the Appleby Overnight Program Director with the planning and facilitation of activities 
  • Establish excellent communication with campers and fellow staff by being visible, approachable, available to answer questions, mediate disputes, maintain community standards and to effectively deal with issues as they arise
  • Email and correspond regularly, when not engaged with campers. During program hours, must be accessible via walkie talkies to maintain communication with Program leadership and fellow team members
  • Follow all Appleby Camps policies and procedures including Appleby’s Mutual Respect policy
  • Participate in all required training, including related to health and safety 
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Follow emergency procedures for medical and other emergencies, accompany students to medical facilities if required
  • Work with day program staff to ensure that all campers are fully engaged in their respective day programs, and that they arrive on time, prepared for their day with snacks, water, appropriate clothing, etc.
  • Follow disciplinary procedures for students according to established policies and protocols  
  • Receive and respond to instructions from the Appleby Overnight Program Director 
  • Capture photos and videos of students when members of the Communication Team are unavailable

Knowledge, Experience & Skills: 

  • Experience in a similar overnight camp/recreation program setting is required 
  • Strong skills and demonstrated experience working with children ages 10 to 14 
  • Related work experience/teaching in camp or educational environments
  • Demonstrate empathy, kindness, and care in all interactions 
  • Nurture a positive overnight environment
  • Ability to host games and activities in front of large groups
  • Versatile and dynamic in running group activities
  • Proven ability to mentor young staff to work effectively with children and youth in a camp setting
  • Strong independent work ethic, self-awareness of appropriate instances in which to escalate
  • Training and work experience building relationships with instructors, campers, camp families and staff
  • Supplemental student safety/mental health training considered a strong asset
  • Bronze Cross and/or NLS certification in lifeguarding is an asset
  • Post-Secondary Education at the University level is preferred
  • Experience building relationships with peers, campers, parents and staff
  • Able to deal with emergencies calmly and effectively
  • Reliable, team oriented, professional, and creative and versatile in running group activities
  • Be able to lift 20 kg 

Workplace Requirements:

  • As a condition of employment a criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening is required
  • Must reside on Campus for each working night (Sunday to Thursday evenings from June 24 to 28, 2024 (training) and July 28 to August 23, 2024). 
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR – C (certified on or after Sept. 2022) is required
  • Successful candidates must attend the required Day Camp training sessions Friday May 30 to Sunday, June 2, 2024 and Camp Set-up Day June 17, 2024

Appleby College Camps provides the highest quality of instruction to campers in a fast paced and challenging work environment. Compensation is dependent on experience and qualifications.
