Summary
Operating Room technicians are integral members of the intraoperative care team. Their role is to: 1.) assist the operating room team, to include anesthesia providers, in the acquisition, preparation and application of the equipment and supplies required for surgery/anesthesia activities; 2.) provide support to the intra-operative team for routine and complex surgical cases by assisting with transport and positioning of patients; 3.) prepare and maintain patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before, during and after anesthesia as directed.  

Clinical Responsibilities:
Anesthesia Provider Support
Assists Anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) in the acquisition, preparation and application of equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia as directed. Basic anesthesia OR turnover, cleaning and stocking. Ready supplies, mechanical and electronic equipment, to help anesthesia providers monitor and manage patients. Prepare equipment and supplies needed to administer anesthesia to patients as directed. 

Intra-operative Support Patient transport and positioning. Ensure that equipment and operating rooms are terminally clean/sterilized and functioning properly after each surgery. Serves as a resource person for all members of the intra-operative team. 

Non-Clinical Responsibilities:
Ability to rotate shifts. Coordinate the flow of supplies, equipment, and instruments between SPD and OR/Procedure rooms. Maintain supplies and equipment in all intraoperative areas and removes/replaces needed equipment.  Stocks and maintains/removes supplies.  Ability to think critically. Strong verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented and accurate. Ability to multi-task and manage time well.  Able to function well under pressure, adapt to change and perform most functions independently; more complex functions require direction from OR Leadership. Remain flexible and alters/accepts various tasks and assignments as they arise, per the Director’s requests or designee. 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
Education
Required: High School Graduate or Equivalent; Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider 
Preferred: Knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology

Experience
Required: Operating Room and/or Perioperative experience
Preferred: Anesthesia Technician; may have an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Skills
Demonstrate knowledge of principles and policies concerning intraoperative procedures. Must     
be able to read written directions and to write legibly.  Must be able to communicate effectively  
with patients and multidisciplinary hospital staff. 

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk, hear and use both hands to easily communicate. This position ls very active and requires repetitive motions, carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting and stooping all day. Heavy physical requirements: exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.

  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.

Avanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification Requirements:
(CR.le) As part of the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification, at a minimum, the Program direct-care staff, must have one (1) hour of education specific to the Program scope, initially, and at least annually thereafter.
(CR.le) As part of the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification, staff possess adaptability to processes as related to up to date best practices, collaboration between departments, compliance with protocols/processes, communication, cooperation and exceptional customer service.

Within 90 days of hire or, if currently employed, within 90 days of signing the job description, must adhere to:
  • Orientation of Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification
  • In compliance with the Program education requirements
  • Completed department specific competencies
Environmental Conditions:
Primarily works inside, may experience the following hazards: biological, needles and sharps, radiation, stress, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and occasional temperature extremes.

Occupational Exposure:
Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.
