Nurse Aide In Training

Columbus, MS Part-time $10.00/hour

JOB SUMMARY:

The Nursing Assistant in Training may function in the capacity of a nurse assistant only after

completing a certified nursing assistant program and are waiting to take the state skills and written

exam. The non-certified Nursing Assistant in Training may function as a nurse assistant and assure

resident safety, while completing a state-approved certification program. Once state testing is

completed and Nursing Assistants in Training receive confirmation of passing, they are not considered

a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and would follow the job description for the CNA.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Care and Services:

 The Nursing Assistant in Training follows state-approved clinical curriculum including:

o Takes and records vital signs

o Measures and records height and weight

o Calculates and records weight gain or loss

o Calculates and records fluid intake and output

o Cares for the Resident's environment

o Recognize abnormal changes in body function and the importance of reporting such

changes to a supervisor

o Makes routine rounds on assigned Resident

o Bathes Residents

o Assists with grooming, including mouth care

o Dresses Residents

o Toilets Residents

o Assists with eating and hydration

o Uses proper feeding techniques

o Calculates and records percentage of meal eaten

o Observes Resident's skin when giving care and reports changes to licensed nurse.

o Provides skin care per protocols

o Is aware of developmental tasks associated with the aging process.

o Responds to Residents' behaviors in ways to help minimize the behaviors .

o Allows Residents to make personal choices.

o Provides and reinforces other behavior consistent with the Residents' dignity.

 Provides nursing rehabilitation/restorative nursing by:

o Promoting Resident’s/Resident’s ability to adopt and adjust to living as independtly as

possible

 Provides non-Resident care including, but not limited to:

o Washing wheelchairs

o Cleaning soiled utility areas

o Cleaning nurses stations

o Cleaning shower and whirlpool rooms

o Cleaning kitchen areas on the nursing unit

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education

 Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

 Must be a student in the facility’s state-approved Certified Nursing Assistant program.

 Possess some computer skills and understanding of documentation software program

preferred.

Specific Requirements

 Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

 Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such

action.

 Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors,

government agency personnel, and the general public.

 Must possess the ability and willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel.

 Must have patience, tact, a positive attitude and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to

handle difficult residents.

 Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them

into existing nursing practices.

 Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.

 Must not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Physical and Sensory Requirements (with or without the aid of mechanical devices)

 Must be able to move continuously throughout the workday.

 Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.

 Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function

adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.

 Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work

effectively with residents, families, personnel, and support agencies.

 Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which may

include a medical and physical examination.

 Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at

times, hostile people within the facility.

 Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 10 pounds to a minimum height of 5

feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 5 feet.

 May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

 Sitting: 1-2 hour per 8-hour shift. Alternates frequently to standing and walking.

 Standing: 4-5 hours per 8-hour shift. Alternates frequently to walking and occasionally to

sitting.

 Walking: 2-3 hours per 8 hour shift. Alternates frequently to standing and occasionally to

sitting.

 Lifting: 1-10 lbs. Continuously

11-20 lbs. Occasionally

21-35 lbs. Rarely

36-50 lbs. Rarely

51-75 lbs. Rarely
