Senior Medical Coder

Responsibilities

• Abstract and perform ICD-9/ICD-10-CM coding of general acute hospital (inpatient and outpatient) and physician medical records by applying ICD-10-CM Coding Guidelines for inpatient and outpatient settings and related Official Coding Clinics.
• Ability to function in a lead role and/or train Health Information Management (HIM) medical record reviewers.
• Knowledge and skills to serve as “Master Coder” (i.e., gold standard) for all coding projects.
• Analyzes medical records and identifies documentation deficiencies.
• Serves as resource and subject matter expert to other coding staff.
• Reviews and verifies documentation supports diagnoses, procedures and treatment results.
• Identifies diagnostic and procedural information.

Requirements

• Minimum Highschool diploma or equivalent.
• A minimum of five (5) years of experience in abstracting and ICD-9/ICD-10-CM coding of general acute hospital (inpatient and outpatient) and physician medical records by applying ICD-10-CM Coding Guidelines for inpatient and outpatient settings and related Official Coding Clinics.
• Proficiency in computer skills including typing speed and accuracy
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of data entry and transcription
• Must have one of the Following Certifications:
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
