Mechanic Helper

St. James Parish is hiring a Mechanic Helper under the Operations Department. 

This position will be responsible for carrying out maintenance duties relative to upkeep of the shop and all vehicles serving as helper to the shop foreman. This position is classified as essential during declared emergencies or natural disasters and non-exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Â·        Become familiar with all equipment relative to the proper and safe operation of vehicles and operate them in that manner

·         Check all vehicles for interior and exterior cleanliness and bring each up to minimum standards at least twice per week and/or whenever feasible

·         Check and adjust tire pressure on all operating vehicles at least weekly. On all others, at least monthly

·         Check all belts, transmission fluid, motor oil, windshield wiper blades, brake fluid levels, coolant level, hoses for leaks and make appropriate adjustments

·         Be familiar with all department policies and regulations and functions within their framework

·         Attend staff meetings when required

·         Become familiar with all safety and emergency techniques and apply it when and if the need arises

·         Perform special and related duties or assignments as requested

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.  Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Valid La Class “D†driver’s license.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A high school graduate or GED. Acquire and maintain valid La Class “D†driver’s license. Physical examination from a certified physician. Possess competent and sound judgement.
