Veterans Engineering is seeking a Medical Records Technician (MRT-CDIS) to support the Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) program at the Lt. Col. Luke Weathers Jr. VA Medical Center in Memphis, TN.
Working closely with the Clinical Documentation RN Advisor, the MRT-CDIS will play an essential role in ensuring that medical records accurately reflect patient care provided—supporting proper coding, quality outcomes, and third-party reimbursement. This position is critical to both the financial and clinical integrity of the medical center.

Collaborate with the CDIS-RN and clinical teams to improve documentation accuracy and completeness.

Perform concurrent and retrospective medical record reviews to identify documentation gaps or clarification needs.

Serve as a liaison between healthcare providers, coders, and the Revenue Utilization Review (RUR) team.

Ensure documentation supports accurate Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) assignments and third-party billing requirements.

Educate providers and staff on documentation standards and regulatory compliance.

Maintain proficiency in current coding systems (ICD, CPT), federal guidelines, and utilization management principles.

Contribute to accurate quality metric reporting and physician performance evaluations.

Participate in annual competency assessments related to CDI practices and regulatory compliance.

Minimum of 2 years of Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) experience.

Strong understanding of medical terminology, documentation guidelines, DRG assignment, and coding systems (ICD, CPT).

Experience in collaborative healthcare settings with multidisciplinary teams.

Knowledge of third-party billing processes and utilization review standards.

Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in reviewing complex clinical records.

Bachelor’s Degree preferred (Health Information Management, Nursing, or related field).

Master’s Degree optional.

Professional certifications from one or more of the following:

AHIMA (e.g., RHIT, RHIA, CCS)

AAPC (e.g., CPC, CIC)
-
ACDIS (Clinical Documentation Specialist credential preferred)
